What is expected of our kids in 1st Grade?
So we survived Kindergarten and my son did really great, especially with the reading level. He was on a first grade reading level by the middle of the school year and ended Kindergarten with a level F in reading.
But now I worry for 1st grade. Especially since they have tests and stuff and I worry how my son will handle those. His reading level is great but how well is the comprehension part? He didn't do too bad with it in Kindergarten but first grade will be more challenging...
Can someone give me some tips on what they do in first grade. I hear they have spelling tests every week. That panics me cuz his writing is ok. He spells words the way it sounds to him. Like one time he brought home a class project he did, and they had to write about a picture and he used the word "right" but spelled it "RIT"... or the word "great" he writes it "gret".
I'm panicking already...LOL

Re: What is expected of our kids in 1st Grade?
My son finished second and never did a spelling test. In fact he hardly ever has a test. I am sorry but I do not remember what they did. He definately became a writer in first grade and ended the year on an L reading level (after being an F at the end of kindergarten.) He learned to add and subtract using various methods...but that is all I remember.
Of course all schools are different and kids too. My son had kids in his class reading at at J by the end of kindergarten and a Q by the end of first. He is kind of middle of the road. He also has friends in different schools who took spelling tests since kindergarten. So I think its best to ask the first grade moms in your school or even better, who had your teacher.

Re: What is expected of our kids in 1st Grade?
My son just finished 1st grade and it wasn't too bad at all. His hw was lighter this year so that was a plus.
His teacher started spellng mid way thru the year and everyday there was spelling hw and every Friday a test (some classes started early in the year - his teacher started the year off saying she doesn't find that works and started later in the yr). I think they do a lot of practicing in class bc by day one he knew how to spell most words even ones he didn't know before. But most of the weeks the words were pretty easy. My son had math tests about once a month or so. My son never studied as the teacher prepped in class and half the time I had no clue he was having one until he came home and told me so. He got high scores on every test so I guess studing wasn't impt but he dos excel in math. The tests were reviews of the unit they were working on and more advanced than I expected. He even had midterm type tests which determined if they got above average or not on the report card which had pretty high standards.
Things he did this year: -more writing - details, caps, punctuation, relative, more creative, etc. -math-number facts, money, couting, time, fractions, adding and subtracting getting up to basic adding and subtraction with 2 digit numbers, word probelms - thinking out side the box - showing how you get the answer
reading-kept going to more advanced level and with more comprehension

My DD had spelling tests weekly. Spelling and math homework daily. She had a reading log that she had to fill in every day with school provided books. Every week they learned 5 new vocabulary words. Had to be able to define the to the teachers.
Math- addition, subtraction. Word problems, some geometry. They learned their coin values as well and were doing word problems with those by the end of the year.
The teacher had them write stories in their writers notebook every day. Trust me, they don't care if words they haven't learned yet are spelled incorrectly. As long as they are sounding them out and spelling them to the best of their ability it's ok.

Same as above plus poetry assignment every week. The spelling tests were not bad. Their homework focuses on it so they learned it. Half way through they start having sentences on their spelling tests.

Re: What is expected of our kids in 1st Grade?
there is no state testing in 1st grade..or do you mean tests in general? DD didnt have too many tests, maybe once in a while a math test. maybe depends on the district but DD never had spelling tests....
she would have new words each week and have a packet for homework, she had to complete mon-thurs and hand it in on fridays...one night she wrote the words 3x"s each, another night make sentences, ect..nothing too crazy.
i think 1st and 2nd grade they are easier on the kids but once they are in 3rd its a whole new ball game...i wouldnt panic too much, even though the schools standards are higher than when we went to school....DD had a great year in 1st grade...and im sure your DS will too!

What is expected of our kids in 1st Grade?
My son had a spelling test and math test almost every week. There was a lot more journal writing and the math (envision program) was ridiculous lol. Homework usually consisted of spelling words - writing, sentences, ABC order - phonics, math worksheet and science/social studies dittos. Not all in one day of course, but throughout the week Mon-Thur. My son did wonderful in first grade and now I'm stressing about 2nd, lol.
