The convertible carseat comes with a 5 pt. harness that is recommended until the age of 5 and then convert into a booster seat (where you put the car seat belt across their chest) once they reach the weight/age requirement.

A convertible seat can be used rear facing OR forward facing and includes a 5 point harness
Children should be rear facing to 2 years of age. There is a great thread on here which will help answer any questions you have about it......... http://www.lifamilies.com/chat/topic-548480-1.html
Booster seats just position older children so that the 3 point adult seat belt fits them properly. They don't go into a booster until between the ages of 4-7 years old depending upon maturity level and approximately 40 lbs.
There are also Combination seats which go from a forward facing 5 pt harness to a booster (like the Graco Nautilus) but those are for children who no longer need to be rear facing.
