What is the difference between light brown and dark sugar for cooking?

What is the difference between light brown and dark sugar for cooking?

Dark brown sugar is "packed" so you can shape it into a ball and it wouldn't crumble. Light brown sugar does not have the same consistency and is in a granulated form much like regular sugar. I think dark brown sugar has a high molasses content.

Light brown sugar doesn't have to be granulated. I've always used that in baking (not granulated).
Dark brown does have more molasses. I follow what the recipe says and if it doesn't specify, I usually use whatever I have on hand.

I've never seen light brown that isn't granulated. Good to know!
