what is this world coming to??
after reading about the couple who neglected their children b/c of computer games, and reading the posts... it got me to thinking.
do you think the world IS getting worse or do you think it's only that we hear more of it than in previous "times"?
thoughts?

You know - this was a discussion I was just having yesterday with my DH and cousin when we were talking about the fact that kids cant go outside and play anymore b/c they get kidna;pped. My cousin was like - but is it happening more or are we hearing about it more....
I dont know about the abductions, but with the computer/video game stuff - the fact is - we are surrounded by more and more distractions that remove us from other people, so yes - I believe that it can cause people to becomre more desensitized and less attached to people around them.... Not sure if it answers your question, but in a nutshell, I believe things are geting worse....

I think things are different now. Same kinds of things are happening, but there are different mediums. Because information is so easy to come by now, it makes news more accessible to more people. But by the same token, I think in some ways it makes things easier for the "bad" people as well.

I definitely think it is getting worse.
I think that all the video games and technology has made things worse to a degree. Not to say that technology is entirely bad but it is leading to kid inability to focus and concentrate and obviously people becoming obsessed with it.
Over the weekend one of my nephews said when we came to our house, "How come there aren't any toys here?" Since we don't have children we don't have toys but the kids had to get more creative and play horseshoe and catch in the backyard. Scary that this is the way kids think today.

i actually think that people are just better informed.
back in the day - if a family member was caught doing something like molesting a child - the entire extended family would want to cover up the "shame" instead of doing something about it -now, even a family member will turn him/her in and his/her actions become public information
the govt/ public is also more involved in "family life" where before what happened in the home was OFF LIMITS and social agencies could not get in to see what was really going on in the household
also - children/young adults are better informed as to what is normal and what isn't - so if they know something strange is going on they are more likely to say something - there is less of a taboo when children speak out against adults
