of the "American Dream"?
I just asked my father this question, (he came to this country as a teenager with his family and also stopped going to school in second grade so he can support his family)
His answer in spanish of course: My american dream was to watch my kids grow up with endless possibilites and with smiles on their faces all the time because they knew that I, as a father provided them I life that I didn't have.

My parents came here from Italy as teenagers and this is totally what they've said to me about what the american dream means to them.

For DH and I to be as happy far down the road as we are today with a bundle of happy, healthy children
Hopefully with a nice home to raise them in filled with laughter, good friends and our families on occasion

Re: What is your definition...
Since I've been to some really poor countries (where 1/2 the houses DID not have roofs), my definition is scaled down.
A roof over my head, food on my table, an education & possiblities of a better life for my kids, and some way to live comfortably in my old age.

Sounds like one more reason to love your dad.
