its not true, but even if it were, Im all for it. Why shouldnt kids be exposed to all kinds of lifestyles and acceptance and tolerance start at an early age? Since I dont see ANYTHING wrong with the gay lifestyle, I have no reason to shield my son from it and are more than happy and HAVE already explained it to him. When they passed the gay marriage bill, I was in my room crying watching the news bc I was so happy. My DS asked why I was crying and I told him bc they passed a gay marriage bill. He asked what it was and I told him, sometimes two men love each other and sometimes two girls love each other, but they werent allowed to get married like Mommy and Daddy and that made me sad. Now they are allowed to and it made mommy so happy she cried. To me, it was no different than explaining different races to a child and how all people are different.

Re: What is your feeling on the whole Bert and Ernie get married issue?

It is silly.
Ernie sits in a tub with a rubber ducky and Bert is walking around like a pigeon. At what point in their day do they put down the ducky and hold hands with their spouse??

They could make christopher or the Indian girl gay...but the puppet singing in the tub to his toy?

ummm I think people have way too much time on their hands if they are concerned about this.

Some people try too hard to be PC.

ETA: I actually always thought of Bert and Ernie as brothers so.. Chat Icon

When I was a kid I thought they were brothers too! I never thought anything odd of them living together! While I'm pro gay rights, I think having them get married is not appropriate. I'm glad they're not going through with that!

Re: What is your feeling on the whole Bert and Ernie get married issue?

this pisses me off to no end b/c I love Bert and Ernie even now and my DH always makes jokes about them being gay, or will send me those gangsta rap ernies and berts just to tick me off. He sent me this during the week and i almost lost it.

THEY ARE PUPPETS, WHO ARE SUPPOSED TO BE KIDS AND BEST FRIENDS. They're kinda like the odd couple..opposite personality friends living together. Lets just keep it innocent and not make it about being gay.

sorry...its a sore spot for me..lol.

I have no objection to them having them teach tolerance for other lifestyles. Even if they wanted to have a character who had 2 same sex parents, go for it, but as far as I'm concerned the puppets should be asexual.

I wasn't keen on that sl*t Miss Piggy either. Kermit should have filed harassment & stalker charges.

That's just stupid. No one else is married on that show and Bert & Ernie are supposed to be friends.

My Uncle who is gay, called me bc I had posted something on FB about the exchange with DS that I mentioned above and he called just to thank me, for teaching him so early and for not being ashamed of his lifestyle or "hiding" it from my DS as if there was something wrong with it.

I agree with most of this, I just don't think B & E should be married... no one else is and I always thought of them as brothers. Besides, what kind of relationship example is it setting if they sleep in separate beds! LOL

they're puppets for crying out loud!
let's let kids stay kids for at least a little while, before shoving PC attitudes down their throats!

I couldn't agree more! The whole thing is ridiculous!!

Re: What is your feeling on the whole Bert and Ernie get married issue?

I'm not sure what this is all about as this is the first time I am hearing this. But, if what you are saying is that they are going to do a gay marraige episode I think it is ridiculous and I would not allow my DS or DD to watch it. I'm sorry but 1,2 and 3 yr olds are too young for this kind of topic to be broached. My DS is 3.5 and very smart and he doesn't understand marraige PERIOD - for cryingout loud - he wants to marry ME! This is way above his head and, frankly, I think its disturbing to try and introduce such a controversial topic to toddlers b/c lets be honest, most of the kids watching this show are under 3! And, if this is happening, I think it's clearly b//c of the writers personal agenda!

I'm the most social liberal you will ever meet.

BUT I think its crazy!

Why should children be exposed to sexuality. Its crazy. Marriage is for adults. Characters shouldn't get married to anyone. Kids relate to the characters on their own level. These characters aren't adults, IMO.

I think people are also wrong to think sex education in kindergarten is a NOT good thing. In a proper formal setting, where discussion is simple, age appropriate and open and questions can come up about adult behaviors and children behaviors, and that children are protected from adults thy try to force adult behaviors on children. Homosexual as well as heterosexual behaviors are reserved for adults. And this is what they need to be taught.

I would have little issue if say one of the human adults was married to same sex. But the kids do not need to know the details. Marriage is for adults.

Re: What is your feeling on the whole Bert and Ernie get married issue?

it's not something that was ever even entertained by sesame street...rumors just spread like wildfire and before you know it people were all "ohhh boycott sesame street" on FB... it's ridiculous. Bert and ernie are friends...despite alot of adults views on their close relationship. theres no reason why every close same sex relationship has to be picked apart, clarified or labeled.

as far as children being exposed to it and explaining these types of relationships...that doesn't bother me and i'll have to deal with it sooner rather than later anyway. My mom is gay and i'm still close with her ex GF who raised me for 17 years...so I'll have to someday explain to PJ why he has so many grandmas! lol!!!

I also agree.

DD (5 yrs old) watches Modern Family with us and asked us just about the first time why the two men had a babyand how could they live together? So we explained what it means to be gay. And that we accept people being gay and gay marriage as well.

Kids notice things very early. I dont think it would hurt to introduce diverse situations so they can learn about it.

Re: What is your feeling on the whole Bert and Ernie get married issue?

I completely support gay rights.

I don't necessarily think Sesame Street needs to address the "issue," yet I do think there should be some children's show out there to show HEALTHY same sex marriages. How fair is it that Johnny's parents are not represented in any way in the shows that he watches? Not sure how this show would come about, but all I know is that kids of same sex parents need something to relate to/connect with as well.

Re: What is your feeling on the whole Bert and Ernie get married issue?

If it's really so important to teach 5 year olds about the real world so early in life then they should have Bert want to get married and Ernie saying no since he's a commitment-phobe and then Bert lash out by cheating with Oscar. Somewhere down the line one of the puppets should get pregnant so we can discuss sexual intercourse with our children as well.

I don't know but when I was a kid, I wasn't thinking about civil rights or political issues or love and relationships. I just wanted to see what silly thing Ernie was going to do to get Bert frustrated and then see them fix the problem and sing a song in the bathtub. Whether they were single, dating, married, or divorced would have meant nothing to me.
