What kids learn and No, No, No, No, No, No, No, No, No, No, No, No, No, No
Ok so we all know kids learn QUICK. I do believe they hear everything we say and how we say it even if we think they aren't paying attention.
With that in mind I am very very careful how people talk around AJ, what I say with what infliction and what words we use.
I use 'big words', as my husband says, often in my daily speech. I used to cuss a LOT and finally made it a game in my head to find other words. Well if you can find another word for a bad word you can find about a dozen more for a good word too. It excerises your mind and makes me slow down my super fast speech to think about what I'm saying.
Now with a kiddo its been great to get my point across while being vague.
But she can and will repeat words she hears. Her favorite right now???
No.
Of course I knew this would happen etc. I know I can't stop it but its a little grating to hear. She hears it soooooooooo often at my aunt's house its sickening.
My aunt is old fashioned so "No" is the replacement to "ah, um, eh" Example: Me: so she can reach the doors now, just FYI, you may want to bolt lock the front door
Aunt (literally, I counted): No, No, No, No, the front door was open when you came in but No, No, I try to bolt lock with with AJ in the room. Guess I'll need to be sure to double check it. No, No, No, No, we don't want her walking out the front door.
I just looked at my hubby as I held up my hand and counted out the No's (I had her on speaker phone on my cell). I had JUST talked to her about cutting back on saying "No" so much cause AJ now says no for literally everything. And it only started last week.
He smiled back. I know she's old fashioned and I can't stop her but its strange that she really doesn't hear herself at all.
When I asked her not to say No so much I did it right after she did a 'rapid fire' No means yes line. (what I call it). And she stood there flabbergasted and shocked. She heard herself say the word but told me that was only just that one time.
I'm slightly concerned because since she uses No so much more than I do, No has less meaning now. I try to only use the N-O word when its a serious no-no. Now she doesn't even blink when I say "no" and that's kinda annoying. That and every thing is "no"
Do you want Juice? Before "Juice" was the reply for yes, now... "no" and if I think she means no and dont give it to her she goes crazy .. "NO NO NO NO NO" and starts to cry, pulls us to the fridge. When I say "what honey do you want juice?" ... "NO!" and has us open the door then "NO" cross arms while staring at the Juice. Then I give her a juice box and she says "Kay" then hops off happily.
*Sigh*
Toddler stuff is hard!
I hope this doesnt mess her up for daycare. I get AJ back full time in two weeks.. Man I can't wait!
This is a vent and a question.. anyone else's 2yr old Obessed with the word No?

I have only 1 bit of advice from the mommy of the NO KING.....get used to it.....
I literally seethe every time I hear that word, and yes, it IS a phase that needs to run it's course. Either THAT or I have THE WORLD'S most stubborn child. I could wash his mouth out with soap every day and he would still say no. And now he's getting smart...sometimes instead of no, he says "huh"...... because he knows he's not supposed to say no.......isn't that just darling?

It's totally a phase. I'm pretty sure all toddlers go through it no matter how many times they hear it.
I don't really think you can ask your aunt to censor how she speaks....if her speech pattern is to repeat words....and she's used to it....it's not going to change.
It's one of the things you have to grin and bear when someone is watching your child.

Now that Sean is talking I think it's so funny HOW he says things. He rarely says "no" once. Which is totally my fault -
I'll tell him "No, no - don't touch!" or "no, no no - you're all dirty" or whatever I say it for - I always say it like I'm whining at him
Last night I said "Are you ready to go to sleep?" He shakes his head and says "no, no" "Do you want a bottle?" "no, no" "Do you want to read this book?" "no, no" "Do you want a bananna? "Yeah"
Not yes, "Yeah"

DS just started this..we ask him a question, and he says "no" but very sweetly and softly. He does understand no though, because he will nod yes for yes.
We try not to say no all the time, we use eh eh, or uh uh when we are trying to prevent him from doing something.
But the no phase is definitely interesting.

It really has little to do with her hearing the word said (especially in the context you described) but rather the POWER that the word "no" holds.
Toddlerhood is ALL about control and power. One of the first waya a toddler demonstrates understanding that they have some control over their environment is by using the word "no".

Cole had a lot of trouble understanding No - so when i wanted to tell him not to do something or he couldn't have it I said "absolutely not" - this is a kid on the autism spectrum ... he has no clue what "absolutely" actually means ... but it's a longer statement that I said in a firmer voice so he understood the meaning of the sentiment.

I say absolutely not allll the time! I am definitely guilty of saying no,no,no too, but I try not to. I also say Not an option a lot also...
