What kind of bag to bring on a cruise?
This is my first cruise...and I've been told you don't really need to carry much
All my bags are HUGE
What do you use?

I agree with this, and in addition a bag you can easily carry if you do any off ship excursions. I like those small cross body/messenger style bags.

I have a small on strap backpack that I carry when we go off the ship. Its big enough for our camera, passports wallets and any trinkets we buy.
I carry a wristlet on the ship to go for dinner. I carry my lipstick and my sail and sign card in it...thats about it

a small backpack or tote for time off the ship
i only carried a wristlet for dinner/shows. all i needed was lip gloss, room key, blackberry.

I used a big beach bag while I was at the pool. I had folded it into my luggage. When it came time for excursions I used my cross-body Coach bag.

totally agree with everyone else. i pack an empty tote flat in my suitcase for beach/pool days. I wear a cross body bag for travel/sightseeing days. and i bring a wristlet for evenings on the ship.

When i cruise, i bring alot of stuff with me, and i mostly use all of it.
I bring about 5 bags, all varrying colors and sizes so they will go with everything.
Like my LV speedy, fendi baguette for evening, dior boston bag, and clutch
As far as shoes, I am a nut, and bring about 12-17 pairs of shoes depending on the length of the cruise, and i pack them all in their own shoeboxes!
i bring all my cosmetics, jewerly, etc
I have 7 luggages just for me!

We went on our first cruise in Oct. After the first day, I stopped carrying a bag at all.... I would just use DH's pockets. But when I did need a bag, I carried a really small Vera Bradley.
ETA: For excusrions, we just used an LL Bean messanger bag. Most of the time you never needed to bring a towel so space in a bag like that was NEVER an issue.

WOW - that's a lot of stuff! I can't imagine bringing 7 suitcases for myself. I usually end up with 1 to 1 and a half. We carry our stuff off the ship so we can get off early and there is no way I could do that with 7 bags. I think DH would kill me.
I bring 2 pairs of shoes. Black dress shoes, and sandals (plus wearing sneakers onto the ship). I make sure all of the dinner clothes I am bringing will go with black shoes - never an issue.
And then for bags I dont even bother bringing a bag to dinner (let DH carry my card in his pocket). We go right back to the room after dinner to change back into normal clothes anyway so I never think its worth the bag. When you're on the ship you're never more than 10 minutes away from your room, so we just walk back if we need something.
We have a unisex messenger bag we'll carry around the ship that has wallets, books, etc. And then a larger bag if we're going to the beach and need to carry towels.

I brought a mini-messenger bag for when we left the ship to go on excursions, a wristlet for when on the ship (carried my sail/sign card, camera, and a lipstick), and a small beach bag.

I usually just bring a cross-body bag for off the ship, and like Shorty, I bring a wristlet type bag for when we go to dinner or the shows. IMO, there really is no need to bring too many bags, it's not like you REALLY need them while on the ship. I was usually wearing shorts, or a cover-up over my bathing suit that usually had a pocket where I could stick my room key in, since that's all you really need to carry around with you anyway.

Next time I go on a cruise I'm going to bring a sling type backpack that expands. I was carrying a tote through towns and I was miserable.
For the actual boat, I didn't carry anything around unless going to the pool, then I had my tote.
All you need on the boat is your room key and sunscreen.

WOW, thats like over $300 just for checking luggage. How do you fit it all in the cabin? My Dh would kill me, cause he knows he would be the one carrying it all!

Last cruise we went on was to Europe in May of 09. I took 3 bags. A clutch, a huge carry all and a mid size bag.
