I suggest Havanese. They are about 12-15 pounds, non shedding, hypoallergenic, non barkers. They are sweet, smart, funny, and cuddly. I have 2 and love them to pieces. Feel free to FM for more info!

Re: What kind of dog would be good for someone who lives in an apartment?
Boston Terriers... (I'm totally partial though). The smaller side of the breed runs anywhere from 15-20lbs. They are very smart, and energetic and they looooove to snuggle...
As per the AKC website... The Boston Terrier is a friendly and lively dog. The breed has an excellent disposition and a high degree of intelligence, which makes the Boston Terrier an incomparable companion.
Here's another good resouce... BT's
ETA: We live in a small 1Br apt. and it's perfect for him, enough room to run around in but he loves his walks too!

I second Boston's as good dogs. They tend to not bark which is good for apt's and the females are on the small side (breed in general is small but females ave. about 2 lbs less than males.)

Havanese are great dogs. Also I like my Shiba Inu, but they are a little difficult to train & can shed. They are good as watchdogs even though small & are very quiet. My dog never barks, eve when the other 3 are in chorus
What size were you looking for? Maybe that could help narrow down some choices....

I'm looking for as small as possible and a dog that does not shed that much. I also need a dog that will get along with my step-children ages 11 and 13.

I would not suggest a terrier - as people said they are very energetic and need lots of exercise, so if you dont have a backyard that might not be the best idea.

Re: What kind of dog would be good for someone who lives in an apartment?
there are so many great apartment dogs.
i wouldnt suggest anything high strung like jack russells or miniature pinschers or terriers....
of course everyone on here is going to say their breed is the best, and i am no exception.
chihuahuas are the way to go in my opinion. big time.
i also have a minpin which i do not suggest. i just got a pomeranian, so im not so sure of her temperment yet. i also suggest a chinese crested. wether it be a hairless or powderpuff. they are excellent dogs.
most toy breeds are great for apartments.
good luck!

Re: What kind of dog would be good for someone who lives in an apartment?
we have a maltese and i think that breed is GREAT for an apartment or small living space. they are hypoallergenic and don't shed at all and they need very little exercise. he will be 2 in may and he is about 7 pounds. he loves to play but his temperment is awesome... not a barker unless he wants to play or if he hears something weird and he is awesome with my nieces and nephew. my 5 year olf niece carries him around like a doll and he will let her all day long. i'd definitely recommend malteses.

Re: What kind of dog would be good for someone who lives in an apartment?
you should get a Chihuahua...they don't require much exercise and they are tiny...my Mom's Chihuahua sleeps all friggin day and just loves to be loved....they are so cute too...they can shed a little though...
I love our Yorkie and we had him in Manhattan but he is a yapper and is high-maintenance, otherwise he was great in our apt (we used wee wee pads and never had to take him outside to pee).

If you decide to get a small dog, look into adopting or rescuing one. You can start by doing a search on petfinders.com.
Good luck.
Don't buy while others die, adopt a shelter dog today.

Re: What kind of dog would be good for someone who lives in an apartment?
We have a cocker spaniel and are in an apartment. He's active when he wants to be - at other times he's a real couch potato and we love him to death
He does shed however (not too badly though) and he's a nice medium sized dog, not too big not too small.

Re: What kind of dog would be good for someone who lives in an apartment?
NOT a Jack Russell. My sister has one, and he goes completely stir crazy
My mom has a Yorkie, and while she's a terrier and demands constant attention while we're home, if my mom goes out and I'm busy she just sleeps or plays with the cats. She's paper trained, does not shed, it vry quiet, and is very overweight at 9lbs. She's an ideal apartment dog because she really doesn't need a lot of space to run around. Our kitchen is a lot of space to her. Of course every dog needs fresh air and exercise, don't forget that!

Pekingnese. They need little exercise and are lap dogs. A little bit of shedding! DO not get a Pug for your apt! They are super, duper hyper and shed a ton!!!

I'm looking for as small as possible and a dog that does not shed that much. I also need a dog that will get along with my step-children ages 11 and 13. I would stay along the lines of a Havanese, Shih Tzu, Maltese or Lhaso Apso. Lhasos can be snippy so I might not go that route. Shih Tzus are very intelligent and do not shed. You can also keep them in a puppy cut during their adult life if the longer hair is not something that can be readily maintained (my grandfather's dog HATED getting groomed with the longer hair, so she has a puppy cut).
I would stay away from "designer" or "hybrid" dogs that promise the best traits of either breed (Like puggles, labradoodles, etc). Although it is possible that these dogs can give you a good mix, the lines are not tested & you can actually end up with the worst traits of either/both breeds. (Not to mention that no responsible breeder will breed these types of dogs).
I always check shelters & rescue orgs first, because even though you may get a mixed dog shelter dogs have a very different temperament.
Good luck & let me know if I can help!

Q - you can search by breed or by size of the dog. It's really a great source!!
Good Luck! Maybe we can have a dog double date with Dottie some day!!

Re: What kind of dog would be good for someone who lives in an apartment?
we have a shih tzu... he has adjusted so well to everywhere we have been living. Dh travels for work and for now I am going with him... our shih tzu has lived in our house in CT-an apartment in CT and now an Apt in GA-and he is great! NO issues with him adjusting at all.. I was nervous! NExt test...an apt in NYC, we will be moving out of GA in MAy and into an Apt in NYC
He does not shed Fairly easy to train-took him about 2 weeks to stop his crying at night about a month or so to become perfectly potty trained- He doesn't bark much at all

Re: What kind of dog would be good for someone who lives in an apartment?
JenniferEver is right- my parents and I both have Jack Russells (aka Parson's Russells). We love them but they need a lot of exercise. We both have fenced in yards which helps alot but neither of them would make it in an appartment.
