anyone paint over wood paneling?
Our office is wood paneling from the 50s I think....I hate the darkness of it and want to paint it white - I think it'll give it a nice textured look.
Anyone do this? Did you use regular paint or something made for paneling? I heard that there are some types that allow the wood knots to show through? Not sure if I even want that

Most wood paneling I have seen has a gloss on it. So I would think for the paint to adhere to it properly you would have to remove the gloss, then prime it b/c of the dark color, and then paint over it.
I have never done it but this would be my guess.

we painted over ours.
you should prime it first then paint. That should prevent any of the knots from showing.

I've seen it look decent on the home makeover shows ...
I'd like to paint over ours in our playroom (the panelling is not glossy) but some of it is in bad shape unfortunately.

I believe if its glossy you need an oil primer, and if its flat you use a latex primer.

So what about the cracks? If you wanted the wall to be flat? Would you put joint compound on it?

Honestly....of you want the wall to be flat and smooth....take down the paneling and re-sheetrock!! There is no way to get in each grove of the paneling and make it look smooth.

My parents painted over paneling in two rooms of their house and it looks great. One room is a pale yellow and the other is my sisters room, its lavendar. Prime it first with something like Bin or Kilz and then the paint should adhere nicely. Our whole lower level is paneled and I would have been happy to paint it but DH is removing it all and resheetrocking. What a pain! We removed the sheetrock in our front entry way when we moved in and their was nice sheetrock underneath. We just spackled nail holes and painted. What is under your paneling, do you know? Maybe its sheetrock?

I have no interest in re-sheetrocking this room! What a dusty mess that would be! I'm still recovering from our kitchen remodel  so just painting is enough for us. It is our daughter's playroom/our office and I actually think a textured wall would look cute.
It's not glossy and it's actually in good shape....I WANT the gaps to show as texture so I think the priming and coats of paint would work.
If you didn't want the lines/gaps to come through then I would think you'd definitely have to re-sheetrock.

When we moved in there was paneling in the kitchen and the laundry room. The old owners painted it. We just repainted the kitchen a yellow color and honestly it doesn't look that bad.
We just decided to paint the laundry room. My DH decided to take down the paneling. We were going to re sheetrock and decided to try spakeling first. IT doesn't look that bad at all. You can see some imperfections but we just didn't want to re-sheetrock!

We did it in our den - I was hesitant at first and was pushing DH to just sheetrock it, but it came out really nice, suprisingly. I think the key is to use a good primer and to use a light color for the paint. The effect is that it looks very rustic - country-ish - which is our style anyway so it blends well.
I recommend that you sand the walls lightly first so the primer will stick. Use an oil-based primer and it helps if you use a paintbrush FIRST and paint the grooves before going over the walls with a roller. We found that one coat of primer and one coat of paint covered everything....

I am thinking of doing that too in our basement.
One of of the home shows they said to use a flat paint- not eggshell or glossy and it will turn out better.

YES! That is exactly what I was hoping for - a nice country look.
Thanks for the info - I plan on going with plain white...the room needs to be BRIGHT!

I'm reading about doing this on benjamin moore's website and they suggest cleaning the walls, rinsing, and then sanding all before priming Sounds like a lot of work!
Maybe I'll skip the cleaning and rinsing (the walls don't look dirty) and sand lightly before priming??

We did this - we even filled the ridges with joint compound and taped and spackled where the sheets joined one another. Sanded, primed and painted.
Even doing all that work, it was much cheaper and less work than ripping down and putting up new sheetrock.
You'd never know it was paneling.

my parents used to have wood paneling in their living room...my dad ripped it off and found the wall behind it was in pretty nice condition..he just spackled a bit and re-painted...I would suggest the same

did you have to clean the walls at all? I'm finding that is suggested on a few DIY websites.

painted over the paneling in the den. color (BM louisburg green) is warmer in person. don't mind the total bareness. it is an old pic.

We used regular paint & primer.
We filled in the holes with spackle, sanded, primed and painted.
It was easy and it looked pretty darn good. No pics though, we dont live there anymore.

Yes, we did!
When we bought the house it was ALL wood panelling and it made the house look dated and dark. We did 2 coats of primer and then painted and I love it. In the future I would love to rip it all down and put up sheetrock but for now, it looks great like this.

I know. We got different answers from two guys at the HD paint desk, so then we went to Janovic and they spent a lot of time explaining which paints would work best, which roller covers, etc. They took a lot of time to answer our questions and told us to call if we needed any help during and they'd talk us through it over the phone.
