In a Levit ranch... it starts off behind a wall near the kitchen and fireplace. If they expanded the ranch... it could be moved to the garage or separate room.
Not sure about the cape.

Here is a good picture of it.
My furnace is directly behind the wall where my plasma is hung. Its concealed (you can't see it unless you open the doors).
My ranch was not expanded... so mine is in the original location.

Its just a furnace. The furnace heats all my hot water. I don't have a separate hot water heater.
Also keep in mind there are two styles of Levit Ranches. Both styles have the same 1st floor layout (assuming no modifications or extentions). But their 2nd floors are different.
You have this style... with the roof sloped this way (you get a larger 4th bedroom upstairs - chimmney will sit in the middle of the room - and if a 2nd bathroom is added you get a smaller 2nd bathroom) - Linky
And you have this type... more "triangle" looking from the front... this one is more difficult to get a 4th bedroom upstairs because the slope of the roof is the opposite of the 1st style... 4th bedroom usually more like a "closet"... but adding a 2nd bathroom and also a washroom (laundry room) is easier upstairs - this model has an additional garage which not all of them haveLinky

I see.......... On the first one, what does the upstairs look like? Is there any walking space or just 2 BRs on either side and where would the bathroom be?

You walk upstairs from the back of the house on the Levit Ranch.
When you walk upstairs... the entire left side walking up (right side in the picture) is the 3rd bedroom. Thats on both models usually.
On the right side... on the 1st model... you can usually get a 4th bedroom on that side because the wall is straight on the side of the house (not sloped). The 2nd bathroom would be where that upper window is. But the tricky thing is... that window is at the base of the room... just above the floor because of the slope of the roof. Your shower has to be located at the inner part of that room (away from the slope).
On the 2nd model... the 2nd bathroom is the upper window... but is a more normal positioned window... with a full ceiling. That window is usually the window in your shower stall. See why its difficult to get that 4th bedroom on that style? To the left of the window in the picture there is simply just no space available (usually unfinished space for storage).

Here is a shot of my "3rd bedoom" which is upstairs... and its actually the largest bedroom (although right now our bed is in one of the downstairs rooms - prefer to sleep on the 1st floor).
The door to the left is the stairs going back down. And a lot of that room you can't see cause its on the left side of the pic. I have a full sized treadmill that you can't even see thats hidden there.

In our cape - Our Boiler is under the staircase, like most other Levitt capes. We do not have a hot water heater, we have oil hot water.
Our oil tank is in the garage. Most oil tanks on the capes are on the side of the house. Beware for the ones that are buried in the ground.

I live in a cape. I Had 4 bedrooms. They changed around some walls and stuff. There is still 2 bedrooms upstairs.

Its interesting the way its laid out. The entire second floor is sort of like a "master suite". I have the big bedroom 'area' that is approximately 12x15. Then I have the second full bathroom up there as well... along with my wife's walk in closet (which is theoretically considered the 4th bedroom... which is total BS). Its really nice... very 'airy'. That will most likely be our eventual bedroom when we have kids that are old enough to walk around.
We are currently in the larger of the two bedrooms downstairs. The bedroom we are currently in is 12x12. Its not too big... but we only have a few small pieces of furniture in there so it looks much larger than it is. We also have a king sized bed... and it fits in there fine. The plasma we have in there is mounted to the wall.... so that eliminates any footprint from a TV.

I think code changed (again!) and you can't sell a house with an oil tank underground. All the ones by us are, so the neighbors are all freaking out about the additional expense when they go to sell.

There are houses in Levittown (not original Levits) that have basements. On and around Miller Lane, the Miller capes have basements.
We have a Levit cape. We use our eaves for storage. In addition, we have a huge pantry style closet, because they combined the closets for the 2 downstairs bedrooms (one we use as an office and one holds our washer/dryer.)
Our water heater/boiler is under the stairs.
As far as the layout of a cape, when you walk in the stairs are in front of you. You are in our living room. To the left and back are two bedrooms and a bathroom. To the right is the kitchen. We have an expanded cape so we have a huge dining room with cathedral ceilings to the right of the kitchen. Upstairs we have two bedrooms. The left one is the master and is 2x the size of the right one. We don't have a full dormer, but we have a small dormer which allows us to have a full sized bathroom that is attached to our bedroom.
As far as taxes, we are in Island Trees so we pay around $5500 in taxes. It is cheaper than Levittown school district.

Thanks. If you Google Levittown, you will come up with lots of historical websites. There is a whole section in the Long Island History website on Newsday. And they even have a small museum, the Levittown Historical Society.

Thats not true - you can sell a house - I have looked at a few in L town in the past few weeks. My friends brother is looking. Most of the houses we saw had new Fiberglass tanks that are underground though. Even though they are new, and fiberglass I told my friend not to buy that house. You never know what could happen. To clean up an oil spill could cost you up to and over $100k

Good to know! Everytime DH or I bump into a neighbor the past few weeks it's all we've heard about. It's really getting tiresome!
