I haven't seen this come up since I've been on this board (and I apologize if it has and I missed it.) I'm just wondering what you ladies are planning on doing, mainly if I'm one of the only ones who's leaning towards not breast feeding.

I am leaning towards not BFing also. I am still going to take the class and will try in the hospital and see how comfortable I am with it.

If I do BF, then I would also like to supplement with formula.

At least for me, BF makes so much sense so that is my goal, however, we will see. I will do my best but one can be hard enough. Check back in April and see how I'm doing...lol.

ETA: I think it's a personal decision and I don't flame women who chose not to breastfeed. To each her own.

People need to shut their yaps. Not their kid, not their boobs, not their money paying for the formula.

I am glad to not be alone- I have already gotten flak from one friend, and I am SURE I will get more. I am asthmatic and use a steroid inhaler twice daily. I worry enough about using it now, but there is nothing definitive about the medication and breast milk. At least one person has suggested stopping the inhaler, which is not really an option. Theresa....when my baby was in the NICU, there were twins who were her neighbors...the mom BF both of them...sometimes at the same time (tandem BF)...so it can be done.

Me...I did not BF and we are only bottle feeding. I haven't gotten any slack from anyone in regards to MY choice.

These perfect strangers actually have me scared! They keep telling me the nurses are going to be ****** at the hospital. That they ONLY believe is bfing and they get mad when they hear someone doesnt want to try.

Good to you for trying with two. I will tell you that my friend who pumped for her twins (they were preemies) pumped a GALLON (yes that's right) an entire GALLON of milk a day. I was actually going to use some of her milk simce I had a poor supply but she was on medications and I wasnt' comofrtable.

I'm going to try BF and see how it goes. If it does work, I'm not sure how long I'll last. I wanted to try to do it for 3 months or so.

Re: Feeding plans for when baby is here? (breast, bottle, a combination?)

I have an honest question here for those who aren't even going to try breastfeeding. Is there an specific reason? I'm wondering because I know of a lot of people who are put off because they've heard other women's horror stories and don't want to bother. I know when I first started to try it was hard, but it was definitely worth sucking it up, because I loved BFing. I always thought to myself that if I was going to refrain from doing anything that might jeopardize my baby while I was pregnant, why would I give them food that wasn't the best?

Re: Feeding plans for when baby is here? (breast, bottle, a combination?)

I will attempt to BF, but because I will be going back to work quickly and am unable to pump at work, I will also use formula. I have a feeling that the baby will not take to the boob once he has a bottle, so I will them pump as much as I can- if I can.

Re: Feeding plans for when baby is here? (breast, bottle, a combination?)

I plan on bottle feeding. When I had Jack I tried breastfeeding despite knowing that deep down it just wasnt' something I wanted to do, but I decided to try and see what I thought. To be brutally honest, I just have no interest in breastfeeding; for me it does not feel like a natural thing. Its just not who I am. And while yes, we can have the breast is best discussion and the "I was raised on formula and turned out fine" discussion for hours on end, it really is just a personal decision and for me is all about my comfort level. I did not enjoy one minute of breastfeeding.

And yes, I was formula fed, am intelligent, well adjusted and have a good job, make sound choices, and never had issues with getting sick all the time as a child or adult. Chat Icon

I have concerns about my medication- I take it now but I wonder about how it would affect my milk (the taste, and the fact that it's a steroid). I have done a lot of reading online, and I want know it's 100% safe, and nothing I have read tells me that.

I also have to return to work after 6-8 weeks. I teach in a small school, and privacy is hard to come by. Pumping is not something I want to do in a closet or a bathroom. In the past, I have found that if my kids want to get into a locked classroom, they can.

While I do respect the research that's out there, I also feel that it's become a political issue to the point where I wonder about that too. My niece and nephew were bf'ed exclusively, and sick very, very often. Another friend bf'ed for almost a year, and her son has a ton of allergies. I feel that nothing, even breast feeding is a guarantee, and I think it's sad that women feel that they have to justify their choices about this (this isn't in reference to your question- I feel like we can have a true discussion here, but it seems like women who choose not to BF are often made to feel guilty by the media, medical professionals, even the gov't, and I don't think that's fair.)

I'm not BFing either. everyone has such different opinions on it - especially strangers!! IMO i think formula has come a long way and it has to be pretty close to breast feeding. its definately a personal choice.

ETA - okay by me saying it has to be PRETTY CLOSE is not me saying it is just as good or the same. its just me saying that it definately has come a long way and is not horrible for your child.

I agree with you that is has become political. I also feel that parenting has become sort of like a competition, who had an unmedicated delvery, who BFs, etc. I feel strongly about BFing because I had a BAD experience when trying to BF my first. The lactation consultant was rude to me, as were nurses in the hospital. I have no doubt that many other women experience the same things I did. I feel women do not get adequate support or advice from those around them. Most of the time when I hear a woman has stopped BFing its because they didn't get any support and were misinformed by their doctors. We're also lead to believe that formula is just as good as breastmilk which it certainly isn't. Breastfeeding your child isn't a guarantee that they will be healthy, but it gives them much more health benefits than if they were fed formula. And me personally, I don't try to make other women feel guilty. I just know that if I hadn't had my mother there to help me learn and support me during my first few weeks as a new mother, I would have quit BFing and given my daughter formula.
