I do - very well, I might add.

I always take it for granted, that everyone knows how. I grew up with a pool, so I've been swimming since I was a baby. But I know there are a lot of adults (my mom being one of them) that don't know how.

I am you!!!!

Swimming like a fish since practically birth and my mom can barely doggie paddle!!!!

Re: Do you know how to swim?

I can just barely swim. I took a few lessons as a child but stopped. DH cannot swim and neither can my 3 sisters.

Re: Do you know how to swim?

Yes I do. I taught my cousins to swim and I was a certified water safety instructor a while ago. I worked at a day camp and taught all ages how to swim.

I love the water but I'm afraid of the ocean...

Re: Do you know how to swim?

No... but somehow I passed pool in high school (the teachers were so oblivious, I walked along the bottom of the pool and pretended to be swimming..)

I was dunked under when I was young by a 'friend' and then once I was dragged into the ocean by a neighbor, and of course the undertow took me away.

Too many bad experiences. If it's a pool, I have to be able to stand up, or in the ocean I won't go in past my knees. DH gets mad because I won't go in with him holding me. Even that freaks me out, and I know he isnt going to put me in harm's way.

Being a non-swimmer, best thing I ever did was Helmet diving in bermuda. It's the closest I'll ever come to snorkeling or scuba.

Kind of but definitely not to save my life Chat Icon

Yet my sister is a swimming instructor and a life guard. My parents never had a pool so she couldn't teach me...maybe one day she will! Chat Icon

Re: Do you know how to swim?

I can.Chat Icon I was on the swim team in HS and even made it to state finals for my back stroke. I was also on the Dive team.

My sister and I were put in lessons at Crab Meadow beach when we were like 4 and we grew up on the boat so we had to learn.

I too find myself taken aback when I hear someone cant swim. Specially since we live on an island. I have 1 or 2 friends that can't really swim.

Re: Do you know how to swim?

Yes, I'm a very good swimmer. I've taken lessons almost all my life. Growing up with a pool and boating, knowing how to swim was a must.

Re: Do you know how to swim?

I do-I never remember not swimming & then I took lessons to learn it properly, which I'm not that good at. It was mandatory in HS too.

I never understood how people didn't know how to swim. I don't ever remember learning, I just did.

I guess as adults, its mostly fear & bad experiences.

Re: Do you know how to swim?

yes I do. when I lived in Israel, we used to go camping at Lake Kineret a lot. My Mom told me that my Dad threw me in the water when I was around 2 and I started to swim after a few seconds.

when I first heard the story, Dad got yelled at! Chat Icon

Re: Do you know how to swim?

I can swim but my mother can't. She's terrified of the water and because of that, it was her mission in life to make sure that I wasn't afraid and could swim.

Posted by Shellyesq

I also grew up with a pool and could swim before I could walk. I am a very strong swimmer.

Its funny, to graduate my college we had to pass a swim test. It never occurred to me that at 21, there were some people out there who couldn't swim.
