Oriental Outrage-Race Related
The name for a dance sponsored by a campus club at the Virginia Tech, Midwinter 2006: Tour Through the Orient, is under scrutiny by Asian students on campus because some of them feel word "Orient" is derogatory, according to the student paper there.
The Asian American Student Union called an emergency meeting to discuss the issue of The German Club's dance, a campus tradition for more than a century. Most of the students at the meeting didn't know the term was offensive, so they were educated by the more enlightened among them.
"This is a touchy subject among Asian-Pacific Americans and the subject should not be taken lightly," said Jennel Baltazar. "There are so many different cultures and ethnicities from Asia that it just seems wrong to lump everything into one big 'Oriental' category."
The German Club has apologized, not just for the title of the dance but for some of the decor — images of the Buddha, sumo wrestlers, people performing karate, the Hokie Bird dressed as a samurai, and chopsticks in people's hair — that was described as "exploitative" of Asians.
Those who complained want the money raised from the dance to be contributed to the school's Asian Studies Program as pennance. A university in Idaho will vote to change its current sports nickname, The Crusaders, because of the negative image it presents, according to the Idaho Statesman.
Do you think this is going too far, are we walking on egg shells w/ certain words or terms?

If they didn't know it was offensive and have subsequently apologized and changed the name/decor so that it is more PC then I do not see the need for "penance". THAT is going to far IMO.

Isn't the term "Orient" used pretty frequently in it's different forms (i.e. tour the Orient, Oriental rug, etc.)? It's not being applied to Asian people -
I have no idea what to think.

I guess Asians are the topic of the day...
I do prefer to be referred to as Asian not Oriental.. Oriental isn't a word to decribe ethnicity IMO. People should really lighten up though, not everything is such a big deal

This is definitely going too far, but I'm sure people will find many more new ways to be offended.

As I understand it, "Oriental" should only be applied to inanimate objects.

Right. *Scratches head*. There's always someone or some group that will take offense to something - whether it's tv shows, songs, stereotypes, dances. I just don't know what to make of it anymore.

Orient means east or sunrise east. The Orient typically refers to Asia b/c it is to the east of Europe. Part of the problem with the term was b/c it makes Europe seem like the center of everything. In a way it's similar to how everything above the city (or Westchester) is considered upstate although I wouldn't consider that offensive.

Re: Oriental Outrage-Race Related
It's getting out of hand! That is what I'm getting at. Look at the meaning of PC I found...
Of, relating to, or supporting broad social, political, and educational change, especially to redress historical injustices in matters such as race, class, gender, and sexual orientation. Being or perceived as being overconcerned with such change, often to the exclusion of other matters.

There would be riots I don't think you're too far off topic though. As far as being politically correct, when does it become too much? It's difficult to strike a balance. There are stereotypes/derogatory terms for so many ethnic groups/nations. Do I like that they exist? No. But I'm not going to cry just because someone finds out that my dad's from Sicily and they ask me if he works in waste management or makes some other comment/assumption.
