Looking for thoughts
I was in Target and picking up some Claritin D. It's no longer ont he shelf and you have to take the card to the pharmacist...this is not new nad I get it. But now the pharmacist requests a license and plugs my number into the computer so that the state can keep track of my purchasing of this product. I just don't know how to feel about that.

Re: Looking for thoughts
my first thought was what? why are they doing that?? BUT, in a way it makes sense. with all the kids getting high these days on the cold medicine, they are trying to be proactive.

Re: Looking for thoughts
What if you didn't have a license? Do they ask for some other form of ID?

I was thinking the same thing, it must have something to do with all these kids getting "high" off the over the counter medicines.

Re: Looking for thoughts
I'm not sure how I feel about it - it makes sense, but it also seems very "big brother" to me. And they probably are told to ask everyone. Now, is Claratin something that they make crytal meth with? B/c maybe it's not just an age factor, but if they connect it with your license, then they could keep track of people who buy a lot for that purpose. ?

Yes I think it might be one of the OTC meds that COULD be used for meth labs, I will have to do some research though.

KIDS have been making Crystal Meth with cold medicines and unfortunately kids are killing themselves either by making the stuff or there labs blowing up !

It has to do more than with looks....even though I'm sure you don't look your age But when the state asks the pharmacy to keep records of certain drugs, they need to comply as well.
I am just researching now if this is a state law, but I can't find anything on it. YET.
I jsut don't know how I feel about it...it does feel a little big brother like. I mean I was buying one box of 10 tablets...not mass quantity.

They do this because people who buy large amounts use it to create Crystal Meth and the DEA wants to track it. I would imagine to see who has a meth lab in their house? I don't know. I don't mind them tracking it.

Re: Looking for thoughts
First of all, thank you b/c this reminded me to take Claritin. I just bought some the other day in the city (Duane Reade) and it was on the shelf. No one asked for my license. I also noticed it on the shelf at CVS this weekend. I wonder if it's just Target that does this.

It's like Controlled Substance Medications..you need the prescription.....pharmacy orders it.....dispense the medication...the proof that the pharmacy has is your prescription that the medication is being used and then they can re-order it. I think they are trying to keep track not only who's using them but also if the facility ordering is going to par with the consumers' buying. Let me see if I find it....there's something about this.....I read it not too long ago....
My immediate response is to make it a controlled substance then and require a prescription for it.

a lot of things saves lives, so everything should be controlled by the government? I don't agree with that. (this has nothing to do with Claritin, just your comment)
even by showing ID, what does that accomplish? only kids have meth labs?
ETA: apparently I can't spell
