My friends brother bought a mini chuihua from Shake a Paw for $1500. The dog weighs 3.5lbs. Too bad they didnt sell her per pound. She is adorable though

totally agree, we got our boxer from the new puppy store in east meadow and he is so small, his teeth are small, I got his papers- if you want to call them that- he came from oklahoma and def taken away from his mommy too soon, Im just glad we got him out of there the pet store he was in this huge cage by himself and still till this day 2 yrs later he still doesnt bark much- Im sure they were yelling at him to shut up in the store, he was 3 months when we got him and I couldnt walk him for over a year in the day light cause his ribs stuck out so much Im sure someone would have called the aspca on me, he ate so much just wouldnt gain and vet said hes healthy so finally no bones sticking out!

same with casey she was SO skinny her ribs stuck out Chat Icon

Sorry, I wanted to put out a warning on my question Chat Icon Chat Icon I am only asking this because I really don't know the answer...

What differentiates a breeder from a puppy mill? Isn't the concept the same?

They aren't the same AT ALL! Completely two diffenent things.

This website is very sad and upseting but it tells you about puppymills

www.puppymillrescue.com

Like I said in my other post, if you buy from a breeder, make sure the dogs are registered with the American Kennel Association.

The above website is a great reference for the difference between responsible breeders and puppy mills. Puppy mills are absolute horrors that do not care about the welfare or health of the the animal but are concerned with making $. They have dogs give birth to puppy after puppy, leave them in filthy, small cages, not enough food, water, or shelther - the horrors are endless.

A responsible breeder breeds one type of dog (or cat) and does extensive health testing. The breeder breeds for looks and temperment as well and is in it more for the breed.

ETA - we bought both of our pups from breeders and we did extensive research on them. In the future (and this is not any time soon), I would go through a rescue or shelther. Live and learn but I could NOT be happier with my babies!

bulldogs are an expensive dog..because bulldogs, breed trait of narrow hips - make giving birth perilous...

donna this is why bulldogs are so expensive. because they don't have very many pups at a time that survive.

How could you have done extensive research on buying your pups if you bought two in a matter of a couple of months and THEN decide to rescue?

Donna there was a great article in Newsday the other day about picking the dog that is right for you and your living situation -- and smaller is not always best for an apartment. I will try to find it for you.

No, no idea why purebreds are so $$$. I got Ebony from a breeder in Spain for $, but cheap compared to the US. Next dog will def. be from a rescue foundation, a shelter, or maybe the rejected guide dogs - they turn them away of they are not perfect for the job.

I just wanted to say I met Ebony today and SO ADORABLE!!!!!! Chat Icon

We had never had dogs before and were very concerned about things like temperment, etc. We felt more comfortable buying from a breeder. A lot of what we had read from rescued dogs said thing like "require special care," etc and initially, we weren't sure we could provide that as new owners. As it was, we hired a professional dog trainer to make sure we were training Denver properly.

Donna -

The ONLY thing I am going to recommend on this thread, to hopefully avoid further controversy is...
Don't be so afraid to take an older dog if it's the kind of dog you have decided you like.
We definitely wanted a Weimaraner but they are crazy $$$$, so when I contacted the rescue and they notified me of a nine month old dog that needed rescue I went to see her. She was just too much for her previous owners, but we love her! Plus, she was already housebroken!

I agree.

My second chihuahua was a rescue- he was over a year, not fixed, and peeing on everything- but once we got him fixed he stopped that and he is AWESOME

Re: why are pure breed dogs so expensive?

Purebreeds aren't more affordable for people because breeders want to make sure that the dogs are going to homes that are potential show homes (people that want to show the dog). Usually the pups from the litter that aren't show-worthy will go to "pet" homes and sometimes are cheaper than the better pups from the litter.

Re: why are pure breed dogs so expensive?

donna......

bulldogs are very expensive dogs. they have birthing problems (as a bunch of ppl have stated) and they often need C-sections.

is there any other breed you are looking for?

you can get a decent pet quality dog for $600-$800. it shoulsnt be a problem at all, but i dont think youll find a bulldog for that price unfortunatly.

i would love to help you look for a good breeder once youve decided on a breed.

be aware places like puppyfind.com and stuff are 99% all backyard breeders.

i hope you find the perfect puppy. it defiantly takes time.

like i said, id love to help you find a good breeder ocne youve narrowed it down. i love doing that.

thats what we want..a pet..yet cant seem to find a pet that suits our needs at the moment thats not so darn expensive. I dont mind paying the money for the dog neccesarily as the principle of it. I want the dog healthy of course, but Im factoring in that we are good pet parents and spend a LOT on our animals, and vet costs etc over an animals life span. If we were looking to find a pet to take great care of, why cant we find one for say $500 anywhere? And we have LOOKED....

so can anyone suggest a place to start searching for a small dog, purebreed it does not need to be to have as a pet for around $500? Or is that completly un realistic ?

We have tried even the adoption sites, which often have $300-$500 "donation" fees, which we dont mind, we know they need money to stay afloat, BUT often like someone else said, they are special needs, and we cannot take that on right now. OR older dogs which would not acclamate well to 3 cats and possible babies on the way.
