Sick days at work- are they "allowed" in your office?

i swear my office its a bunch of attendance dictators.

in 5 years i have NEVER taken a sick day- execpt when i went into the hospital and that was planned.

If someone takes a sick day its like the WORST thing around here

annoys the hell out of me!

anyone else have a similar work environment?

its just not fair. i wish i could just tkae a sick day and stay home for once.

also - in our "handbook" we are given sick days - but people are scared to take them

ETA-I WORK WITH ALL MEN!

I worked in an environment like that -- it was almost all men, and I swear that has something to do with it.

Re: Sick days at work- are they "allowed" in your office?

Sick days are so allowed at my job. I do not hesitate to take my sick days I just do not abuse them. That must sucks, Melissa. If your company handbook states that sick days are allowed you should go ahead and take it. Moreover, you haven't take any in 5 years.

Melissa, screw the men you work with. You are entitled to those days.

Re: Sick days at work- are they "allowed" in your office?

When I was hired 5 1/2 years ago I was told I have 5 sick days to use. I USE THEM!
But because of the environment in which I work...I will never call in sick if I am assigned to direct a funeral already.....unless I am legimately so sick I can not work.

It is sort of the same by us...the manager will make comments about people being out sick....so aggrevating.

It's the SAME exact way at my job.

We get 8 sick days a year and any unused, carry over to the next year.

Every sick day you take, is called an occurance, and each occurance drastically affects your review, which in turn, affects your pay raise.Chat Icon

Basically people come to work sick, b/c they are afraid to take a sick day.

We are entitled to 10 sick days a year. I'm a teacher, and it would be hard to NOT take any days (though some teachers are never out). Kids come to school sick so often- with pink eye, you name it.

In spite of that, there are some principals who really, really get on teachers' cases and made it nearly a federal offense to take the days we are entitled to by our contract. Not talking about people who abuse the privledge.

Re: Sick days at work- are they "allowed" in your office?

We have unlimited sick days, but I use only 1-2 days a year.

There are plenty oftime where I am sick and want to call in, but right now we are short staffed and no one can do my job, and it is very busy. So I have to go in. There is no one there to cover for me.

we don't get a certain amt of sick days

we just call out sick - if it you are calling out too many times, you will be docked vaca time or be warned

I don't know how many days is too many though, I would guess 5 or more

- but they are good about it, never ask questions or say anything -- (we also don't get personal days either - it is just all clumped in with our vacation days)

Re: Sick days at work- are they "allowed" in your office?

They are frowned upon at, you have to be really sick. Like I went in last week some days with bronchitis...one of my co-workers went in with strep. They appreciate you making an effort.

With that said, they are being AMAZING now that I'm out almost all week, every week going to different doctor appts w/my DH. They are being more than generous and I'm thankful for that! Chat Icon

Yup. It's good but it's really only 3x a year I can do it...5 days each time. I think I'd rather have 5-10 days and take one each time.Chat Icon

We get 6 days a year. I usually have some to roll over but I will take them for myself or for my kids.

I get 12 sick days per year. I have no problems taking some. I don't take 12, but I may take 4-5 sick/mental health days.

I used to work in a place like this. All men too. If someone called out sick it was like the end of the world. I did alot only because I HATED it there and was pregnant and there was nothing they could say about it! Chat Icon

Re: Sick days at work- are they "allowed" in your office?

I work with all men and they could care less if I called in sick. They all call in sick all the time. I have been there about a year and a half and called in sick twice. One time I came to work the next day - still sick and they sent me home early! Chat Icon

Re: Sick days at work- are they "allowed" in your office?

We're allowed. But up until this year, I never took any when I was actually sick (I would use them throughout the year for days I needed off).

This year, I took 3 earlier this year and I took 2 in the last two weeks, including one today. I have been sick too many times this year.

First of all, it is so unhealthy to make sick people come to work and my guess, it slows productivity when everyone is sitting there catching each others germs!Chat Icon I hate offices/bosses that don't realize that their workers are HUMAN!
Sorry for the rant. The place I work for now is not like that at all. But I have worked at places like that...but you know what, I say f them because I got fired from that job because I had strep throat and a 104 fever. I was not excessively taking days off either. Re: Sick days at work- are they "allowed" in your office?

If you're legitimately sick, then it's ok, but it's not an absolute yes. As long as it doesn't fall at a busy time. If it's busy, then you have to be really bad to not show up for work.

I'm in a salaried position, and technically we have "unlimited" sick days, which are to be used at our discretion. If you have too many sick days, you will get spoken to. But basically "unlimited" equates to maybe 2 sick days a year, if that.
