Cash is always the best way to buy a car.
To pay for the car, I totally believe that. But negotiating a price? Should I go in with intent to finance, but really pay it all off...

they make different deals for different things... find out all your options, and remember to go around a hoilday (presidents day is around the corner) or the end of the month.
Be sure to go to a heavy volume dealership also and not just any dealership. heavy volume just want to push a car and not in it to make the most of 1 deal as a smaller dealer would

Dealers don't always get kickbacks from financing. Usually they do... but one dealer really didnt care who I got my financing with.
Plus a lot of the "incentives" that dealers offer usually comes with a choice.... cash back... or financing. If thats the case... take the cash back and pay cash.
The best way to get a good deal is to call a bunch of dealers over the phone and ask them to fax you over their best price for one of the Hondas they have in stock. Don't even bother going to the dealer.
If you can give them the specifics on what you want exactly... that will help.
The last two cars I bought I practically already paid for before even showing up at the dealer. I got great deals this way.

I wouldn't go on presidents day. It will be too crowded.
I would go during the week... during the day... on a day at the end of the month. Feb 27th or 28th would be ideal days.
Business will be DEAD during those days... they will be eager to move a few extra cars before the month ends.

I always think that buying anything in cash will give you more leeway and def a better deal.

Having family in the business, I will say this - you want a good deal- go either the third or second to last days of the months! Not the last day of the month, b/c if for some reason they cant write you that day it doesnt matter to them then to give you the best deal. At least if you give them a day or two before that "last" day they have time to get you written for the best price and sometimes you could get some things thrown in- like certain tires, options on the vehicle. Good Luck!

I agree, but if you're not picky, do last day of month. AVOID HOLIDAYS, they are fake in the dealership world. Just a way to reel people in. You might think you are getting a deal, but they put your money off somewhere else in the deal. My bf has been in the dealership business for 8 years. I worked in the accounting dept for a dealership for about 3.5 years.

Good Luck!!!! Congrats on buying a car!!!
We have been carless for 4 years now!! It is going to be so weird to have them again. I feel so old, my last car was my suped up Jeep on Thornbirds...now a practical Civic. Consumer Reports holds toyota up so well, so Civic or Corollla..

Re: Car shopping-cash or financing..
I so recommend a corolla instead of a civic. Not because I used to work for a Toyota dealership, but it really is better quality. Even the value is better. Look in the classifieds. A 97 Corolla is worth more than a 97 Civic. But, again, no offense to anyone who has a civic. I also believe hondas are good long term cars. I am just more biased and would prefer a Toyota because that's what I have.

That's what we did on both our cars... we financed, and were able to negotiate a better price because of it, but after making one payment we transferred the balance to a 0% interest card and paid the car off within the 0% interest term so we ended up paying NO interest, and took our time in paying it off in cash...

Re: Car shopping-cash or financing..
i use to be a toyota fan (echo and matrix) for the past 5 years. there service people (multiple locations) have no respect for people and some broken promises by our dealership (melleiumn - sp) made me hate toyota. the only car i would go back to them for would be a prius. toyota makes good cars, but there priumem cars are way too much but since they got a loyal fan based and older generation going for them, they sell there cars.
we switched to nissan
