traveling is a whole other topic. i think its 100% acceptable... i mean, youre TRAVELING! should you just get rid of your cat or dog just because someone 50 rows back may be allergic? that makes no sense.
they could be more allergic to the food they serve or the wool sweater the person in the seat next to them could be wearing.
if you have any kind of severe allergies the airline should def be notified regaurdless

I don't think it's a big deal for dogs to be on planes either. They are generally limited to certain flights per day and it is easily avoidable if you are super highly allergic. And FWIW, in the past 20 years of flying 4-10 times per year -- I have seen one maybe two dogs on a plane.
But I don't get the rest of the dog toting craze.

I had one of those material cart seat liners for when my son was younger, but I have to say that I love Hannaford Supermarket because right where the carts are is a dispenser with antibacterial wipes (and its always full) to wipe down the cart. Not sure if there is one on LI though.
and no, dogs do not belong in carts

Who thinks they should be banned from stores and transportation??
to me these are the exception, but they also don't typically ride in shopping carts.

As for stores, it doesn't really bother me if its a very small dog in a tote.
No way in a cart.
No way in restaurants.
Not around food.
NEVER cats.
Of course, a seeing eye dog is an exception to the rule.
Last year I was in TJ Maxx and this women was in front of me in the pillow section,she took a comfy pillow off the shelf and put it in her cart..only later did I see that she placed it nicely underneath her DOG's tush so he can be comfortable while riding in the cart.
NASTY. I was stunned.
BTW,she didn't buy that pillow so now someone on LI is resting their head on that same pillow. So wrong.

Uh oh.. gotta confess I am guilty of this. I brought my Regi into various stores. But never baby stores.
I have too, but not baby stores. I actually get POed when people tell me I cannot bring my dog into a store, but mine are always contained in their carrier.

sorry, i'm going to have to disagree with you there...(and i AM an allergy sufferer).....

I agree w/ mrserod. If the pets allowed, then its their right. A person with allergies should know that pets might possibly be there.Such as they should know by signs on the store door if dogs are allowed in certain stores..

I just could never do that - my god, what if something did happen and my dog died, I would never forgive myself!

Um, how are "idiots" like me supposed to take our pets across town for their vet appointments? Why should I have to pay for a cab just because you don't like it? Please. My dogs are very well-behaved on the subway & most people don't even know they are in the bag. And as for the cabins of planes, my 4 1/2 lb. dog is NOT SAFE IN CARGO, end of story. Traveling in animal cargo is not comfy, not safe and not supervised. I am not risking my pet's life. Sorry.
I feel badly for allergy sufferers, but there are MANY other allergens on a plane, including people who feel the need to bathe in their perfume, hairsprays, dust, mold, etc. Sorry but if it comes down to you popping an allergy pill or my dog getting thrown around a crate for hours on end, you'd better believe I'll personally hand out the Claritin.
I see it no more inconsiderate than people who allow their children to scream & act like lunatics on the planes, or people who feel the need to *move in* and treat it like their home or office. It is PUBLIC transportation, and when you agree to travel using it, you have to know that OTHERS WILL USE IT ALSO. JMHO.

I think at any time dogs are inappropriate, even if allergies weren't an issue, it's still a health issue. Look, I know my dog doesn;t ahve fleas, ticks, rabies, whatever, but you can't guarantee that another dog doesn't. Plus thre's the smell, or they may not be trained, etc.
No offense to any one's children, but my dogs are cleaner & better trained than most kids. Should we stop allowing children into stores b/c they are in diapers, or they might drool? 
I understand what you are saying, and yes I do agree that there are some irresponsible pet owners who will take a poorly-trained dog or a dog who is in desperate need of a bath to a public store. I think just like any thing else there will be a few who do not exercise common sense, but that does not mean that the exception becomes the rule.

I couldn't agree more with this. And I find if a store is not pet friendly, they should post a sign to let dog owners know that pets are not allowed.
Also, I thought the original question if it was appropriate to "tote" your puppy into stores...meaning you have your puppy bag and they are in there not if it was appropriate to put them in the shopping cart. As long as it's not in one of those places named above and the pet is well behaved inside their tote, I don't see any problems with that. Sometimes it's very difficult to leave them at home especially if they are still litle puppies and you have to run out to get something quick. Sometimes people don't even notice that you have the puppy in the bag. And I'd add definitely not on supermarkets or any food related stores and neither any baby stores. Definitely not put dog in the shopping cart of any store. That's why a tote should be used. And as far as the airplane, if the airline allows it, then I don't see any problems for it. If you are traveling on the plane and you are allergic, I'd assume that you'd make sure as an educated consumer that when you buy your ticket, you'd ascertain that you are not sitting next to someone that might have a pet. As far as the subway traveling, I see no problem with that either as long as the dog is in his/her tote. There are plenty other things on the subway a lot dirtier and filthier than a pup in his tote being carried by his owner. JMHO.

I have no problem with pets in stores. Those are their children to many. In a fancy restaurant, I would nto agree to this, just like I think a child should not be in one.

I would never bring my dog into a store or restaurant for the simple fact that it isn't respectfully to other people (Allergies, gross factor...) Now if there is an outside restaurant that is pet friendly (like in fire island).. Than that is a different story.. If people have a problem with that than they shouldn't be going.

Inappropriate. Dogs don't belong in MOST stores. I just don't see why it's necessary. And this didn't use to be such an issue until Paris Hilton made it the latest "fashion craze". If it's okay for someone to carry around their Yorkie, then it should be okay for me to carry around my 90lb Bull Mastiff - but I guarantee you people would speak up and have a BIG problem with me walking into Walmart or someplace with her. And yes, she has major separation anxiety issues. We deal.
I think comparing dogs (no matter HOW clean) to children (no matter HOW dirty) is ridiculous. Children are human, dogs are animals, period.
As for the other stuff:
Subways - necessary
Airplane cabins - necessary, legal, and regulated
Shopping carts - unacceptable
Carrying your small dog in an appropriate tote, if necessary, NOT as a fashion accessory, fine.

I work in the city and before I became pregnant I did bring both of my 5 lb chihuahuas to work with me pretty much daily. Why- b/c I can. We are small office, my boss brings her Yorkie and it is the environment of our office. The entire building we work in is pet friendly and you will find as tenants among the floors: a weimerana, a small white fluffy dog, boston terrier, 2 greyhounds, a black lab, to name a few.
When transporting my dogs with me, they are in a pet carrier and zipped in- the only opening to the outside "world" are mesh windows on each side of the carrier.
Now- I fully respect all rules- never bringing my dogs into a store that disallows them or in a place where food is served b/c that is just against the law
At the same time- if I'm running errands and I have them in the bag- and I go to barnes and noble- which does allow dogs- I don't feel bad.
As for people that are severly allergic- well it stands that they can have a reaction from just standing NEXT to me with or WITHOUT my dogs- as people who are that allergic have severe sensitivity to pet dander. In that case, if a person was so allergic that inhaling of a small amount of pet dander was to cause death- then, I expect they would carry around that shot (forget what it is called) that would bring them back to life- the same shot that people w/ peanut allergies carry around.
As for travelling on a plane- only 2-3 dogs are allowed per flight- this i assume it to make sure the air cabin isn't filled with dander and is the level that can be cleared in the cabin air circulation system. I would assume, again, that should someone be so allergic to the point of possible death- they would bring this up- and make sure no dogs were allowed on the plane- just like when someone has a severe peanut allergy, they call ahead to request no peanuts served on plane or within a certain row allowance from them on the plane.
I see both sides of the story here- maybe I'm more sensitive b/c I spend a lot of time in NYC and it's become quite acceptable for people to spend a lot of time w/ their dogs. On LI it is a little more weird b/c you guys drive everywhere, etc- but in NYC we do everything on foot- so not necessarily strange to do it w/ dog in tow.

I disagree too- As some of you may remember we might be heading to Los Angeles for DHs job-Obviously Our dog is coming with us. Well, some airlines ONLY allow dogs in passenger cabins...like Jet Blue. We have to travel with him ...sometimes there is nothing an owner can do...and they charge us $$$ for it...why shouldnt we be allowed to have them with us?

My point was a lot of people were making comments that it was *gross* and *dirty*. Of course I know animals are not children, but I am merely making a point that my dog may annoy you, but sometimes there are kids in stores that totally sckeeve me out. Like a kid in a dirty diaper, or a kid who is throwing up from just having lunch or drooling or chewing everything in sight. Not what I want to experience while shoe shopping, but something you know you may face when in a public place that allows children, and also, I am sympathetic. You cannot always find a babysitter to shop, nor should you have to be forced to.
