Six-year-old girl strangled while playing with dog
A six-year-old was strangled to death by a scarf while playing with the family dog in the back yard of a home in Manorville, Suffolk County police said today.
When Kaitlyn Hassard came home from school at around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, the dog, Jessie, an eighteen-month-old, 70-pound retriever mix, began tugging at her scarf.
The little girl and the dog went into the yard, and when her 11-year-old brother went to get her about 10 minutes later, he found her lying on the ground. Their mother called 911 and began CPR, but Kaitlyn was pronounced dead of asphyxiation at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital.
Kaitlyn was wearing the scarf, wet with dog saliva, when she was found; it was not clear whether any further evidence indicated that she had been dragged.
"I don't believe the dog's actions were intentionally malicious," said Detective Lieutenant John Fitzpatrick, a Suffolk County homicide detective, who called the incident "an absolutely tragic story."
The 1 1/2-year-old dog was taken to the Brookhaven Animal Shelter.

What a horrible story! Who was watching this little girl? Am I the only one that doesn't understand why a 6 year old was left outside alone?

Re: Six-year-old girl strangled while playing with dog
i think its ok for a 6 year old to be out in her backyard for alittle bit, it said her brother met her outside ten minutes later.....
i dont agree the dog should be sent to a shelter cuz now its known as a killer there. but the parents are going to blame the dog no matter what, even if it was an accident. ppl need someone to blame.
but i feel so incredibly sad for the little girl. i cant imagine what her last moments were like.

just a thought,...but as a parent...I woulnd't be able to look at the dog if it had accidently killed my child...let alone care for it....even though I know enough to know that it wasn't the dogs fault.

I was thinking this too....but honestly there were times when my mother would start dinner while me and my sister were outside on the swings...and although she looked up often...there were moments that I'm sure her head was down cooking or cleaning dishes.

I completely understand but you were with someone else. 10 minutes is a long time for a 6 year old to be unsupervised...so much can happen.

I feel the same as a parent. There is no way I'd be able to keep that dog, even if he thought he was just playing. so sad.

Re: Six-year-old girl strangled while playing with dog
IMO- I try to do what's right & best see fit for Marissa. I have been guilty of leaving Marissa out w/ the dog for a few mins. It only takes a few minutes for an accident to happen. Only a few minutes and that's the lesson here. AN accident can happen in seconds....

My Casey is an 80lb Golden, and she is 1.5 yrs old. She is still learning and doesn't understand consequences or when enough is enough, so unfortunately I can see how that happened, although it is heartbreaking

Re: Six-year-old girl strangled while playing with dog
May I add that scarfs on kids are just plain dangerous!! Growning up I had a friend that got hurt because her scarf got caught in an escalator....and got her arm broken...
