Hey there! (repost)
DH and I are trying to decide where we are going to stay for our 1 year anni in October.
We're almost 100% sure it will be in San Fransisco
with day trips to Napa wineries, etc.
Our TA suggested the Sheraton in Fishermans Wharf.
I know a Hyatt also exists there -
1) TA says Fishermans Wharf is a better place to stay (more exciting, things to do at night) than Nob Hill/Union Square. For those of you gals who have been there; do u think that this is true?
2)If your vote is for FW - how is the Sheraton?
3) Is it better to take day trips from SF to the wineries - or is it better to drive there, rent a car, and stay at a B&B?
I have never been there so I'm not sure how it all flows.

My TA also recommended flying down to Santa Monica (to save the 5 hour drive) and stay at either cosa del mar, shutters or the lows. Has anyone ever heard of these places on the beach? She said it would be awesome to
check out Rodeo Dr., etc.

Any in put would be helpful towards planning our trip.
Thank you!
Kara

Fisherman's Wharf is nice, but I think that hotels near Union Square/Theater District are better. I think there is more to do in the Theater district area.
FW is great to do and see during the day. Great hotels in that area are the Hotel Diva, Cartwright Hotel, and the Carlyle Hotel. Cartwright is right near Chinatown. You could hop a bus to Haight Ashbury or walk to Pac Bell Park

As for the vineyards, a bus is a great way to see it. You leave via Oakland Bridge and come back via Golden Gate.

Chinatown has some great restaurants. There is a great seafood place in FW. It is called Pier ?.You can catch a ferry to Alcatraz there too.

Another great thing to do is a tour of SF.You get to see Twin Peaks, Japantown, parts of North Beach(the Stinky Rose is fantastic-- great Italian food) and other great parts of the city.

Def go to Haight Ashbury. It is so cool... so many great influences in music started out there.

Lombard Street was great.

We also went to Carmel and Monteray(sp). Awesome. !7 mile drive was great. We walked on the Pebble Beach golf course.

Monteray Aquarium was great too.

Also visited the animal rescue there too.

Re: Need help deciding on where to stay/what to do in San Francisco for 1 year anniversary

We spent three days in San Francisco before heading to Hawaii for our honeymoon. We stayed at a boutique hotel (Archbishop's Mansion) off the beaten path, and we had free parking. We had a beautiful suite and it was romantic and quiet. We rented a car for the three days and didn't have parking problems. We went to Alcatraz, Sausalito, Muir Woods and Napa. Also walked around the city, saw the Wharf, Union Square, Lombard Street. I loved it there, and you can definitely accomplish a lot in a little time. We are planning a trip to Napa for next year, that is the area where I could spend at least a week. Chat Icon

There are soooo many great areas of San Fran that it's so hard to say where you should stay.

However, my DH and I went to SF in June and we stayed at the Marriott in Fisherman's Wharf. WE LOVED IT.

There is sooooooooo much to do there...believe me, you'll figure it out when you get there and you probably won't have time to do it all.

We took two road trips...one to Napa Valley...and only stayed the day.

The next road trip was to 17 Mile Drive...it's unbelievable and a MUST SEE.

I would also recommend going to MUIR WOODS...

I lived in SF for 3 years a few years ago. It's a great city and you'll find that there is a lot to do! I definitely recommend heading to Napa and Sonoma- both beautiful and wine tasting is great. A warning- hotels can be expensive up there, depending upon when you go, so just take that into consideration.

You won't need a car in SF itself- cabs, walking and the occasional trolley are the way to go.

You HAVE to go to "Mama's" for breakfast. It's this tiny little place in North Beach. PHENOMENAL! Omeletes, pancakes and my personal favorite, Banana Bread French Toast. Trust me, the wait is worth it.

Carmel and Monterey are only about 2 hours away by car. Both beautiful little towns- very quaint. You can also consider Half Moon Bay for a day trip- another very cool little town.

I have also lived in LA and know all 3 hotels in Santa Monica. They are all beautiful and right on the beach. You'd also be close to all that is in Santa Monica to do (3rd Street, the Pier, etc.) but honestly, doing Santa Monica and LA is really best on its own. There is so much to do in Northern California that you'll fill up your time fast.

I miss SF a lot- I hope that you have a fabulous time! Feel free to FM me for other out of the way places to go to/eat at while you're there.

Have fun!

The Archbishop's mansion is gorgeous. It actually did belong to the church at one time and was the home of the Archbishop of SF until they moved the residence elsewhere. It is like a block away from "postcard row" where they take all those photos of the victorian homes in the postcards. I had friends who stayed there when they came out and we peeked into a lot of the rooms. If you wanted to have a car, this might be a better choice. Parking on the street in this neighborhood is tough, but possible. Parking at the other areas you mentioned will be alomost impossible unless you are paying. If you do have a car while in Union Square, check out the rates at the garage at Sutter and Stockton Streets.

The Embarcadero would also be easy to get to and there is a lot near there as well.

If you like spas, you can go a little further north of Napa to Calistoga, where they have lots of places that do mud baths and I think they have mineral springs. I have a friend who goes there every year.

Another day trip, or even an overnight is the 17 mile drive others have mentioned. It is Carmel & Monterey and the Monterey Bay Aquarium is amazing. on the way down there, you can stop in Santa Cruz, and go to the boardwalk or the beach there.

The other thread I bumped for you is this one:

We did a great trip to SF. We flew into Oakland.
1. Fisherman's Wharf is nice, but very touristy. It's like staying in Times Square in NY. Nob Hill/Union Square you get more of a feel of what life is like in SF. I really like that when I travel.

2. No clue.

3. We stayed at an AMAZING place up in Napa Valley- the Villagio Inn and Spa. Definitely fly to SF and drive up there. It was so nice. I woudl definitely recommend having your base in SF and staying in Napa for a few days.

We are actually going to a wedding in Mendocino and we are going up to Sonoma and stay at a hotel there. A B&B would be great, but we are travelling with the baby.
