Re: POLL:With the constant increase of the cost of living on Long Island...
We definitely want to move in the near future. It is much too expensive to live in NY.

Re: POLL:With the constant increase of the cost of living on Long Island...
We are considering it more and more especially when we see how much more we could afford in house outside of NY...as much as I love NY...I don't want to stress everyday worrying about money, not being able to afford a house, not being able to stay home with my children because I HAVE to work...I say give us another 5 years and we're DEFINATELY out of here...

Re: POLL:With the constant increase of the cost of living on Long Island...
Well we are just buying a house now... so the answer is probably no for now.
But if we didnt have the house... i would have considered it if I ever lost my job.
But my job is too good right now to justify moving out of state.

Here's a little comparison I did:
Our house on LI appraised at $560k Takes $6500
SAME house in VA with more property: $140k Taxes $600/year!

I voted No. Life is too good for us here. Other places are nice to visit, but there's something very unique about our area that isn't replicated (in my mind) anywhere else.

Re: POLL:With the constant increase of the cost of living on Long Island...
I moved to Chicago after undergrad. It's a beautiful city but I do miss NY sometimes. The cost of living is high, but definitely more reasonable than NY.
The only reason why I'd want to move back to NY is bc of my family. But my mom told me recently that when my youngest brother finishes college she'll sell the house and move here bc she hates being away from her grandson.
I also love the proximity of other major cities when living on the east cost.

According to the salary calculator I would need to make 40% of my current salary - which wouldn't be a problem at all.

Re: POLL:With the constant increase of the cost of living on Long Island...
Both of our families are here- DH's 15 minutes away and mine is in Bklyn so we wouldn't feel like we could ever go- I'm an only child and my parents are gettiing older. There will be lots of grandparents for baby sitting though- but yes, it would be nice to live somewhere cheaper and be a SAHM- then we wouldn't need as much babysitting i suppose!

we did it already....4 months after we got married and were living with DH parents in DH room!!!
It's still a struggle, but it's SO much easier on us in so many ways, I would NEVER go back

depending on where you go and what your profession is....there may not even be a salary difference. DH is making $5K less than what he was making in NY and we're making it pretty good.

Re: POLL:With the constant increase of the cost of living on Long Island...
I just don't think we can afford to stay here and raise a family the way we want to. I would love to move back to East Hampton, where my family is, but that's a joke! We can't even afford to pitch a tent there.
DH wants to move back to Boston, but that's isn't that affordable either. Down south would be the answer, but I don't know if either of us could be so far away from both families.

I think it depends on your industry, I'm an accountant, moved from New York to Charlotte, NC, kept my NYC salary, and just got a 10% raise.
It all depends on the industry you are in, and where you are moving, The starting salary at my firm in NY this year is probably $53K, in charlotte, it's $45K. You can live sooo much better on that starting salary in Charlotte, and neither is chump change for someone just getting out of college/ starting in the field.
Research research research.

We're going back and forth on this issue. While we want to get out and go somewhere more affordable - we struggle every single time we think about not being in NY!

Re: POLL:With the constant increase of the cost of living on Long Island...
We're already in VA. It's a little differnt for me though, since I was born down here, and my father and his family, as well as my aunt, are all down here.
I live in the Shenandoah Valley (which, well, is kind of in the middle of nowhere).
However, for an example, I have my masters in teaching and make $36,100... We have a 2br/2bath condo, with a large balcony. Pretty nice size place, and pay $750/month.
Something similar on LI would cost at least double that. And my salary would not be double.

Re: POLL:With the constant increase of the cost of living on Long Island...
This is just so sad that we are basically being forced out of our hometowns cause we cant afford to live!
DH and I are going to move to Florida in 5-7 years for sure. His parents are down there, my mom is moving shortly and my sister will hopefully follow. I think my dad might go soon too because my grandparents and uncle are there.

Re: POLL:With the constant increase of the cost of living on Long Island...
I always said I would never move away from family, but I am seriously starting to consider it. When I think about the equity that we have in our house, we could buy a beautiful house out-right in N.Carolina, and only have to pay property taxes, it becomes very, very tempting. Our house needs so much work to make it the way we want it...we could buy a brand new 4 BR, 2.5 bath house, without having a mortgage
