Re: Just Thought I'd Share My Gift From My In-Laws

Yeah but I would only give a card to MY mother -- and MIL just because DH doesn't think of these things. If it is a tradition in her family, that is one thing. But I never give or expect cards from people who aren't directly affected -- like I don't give mother's day cards to my sisters, even tho they are mothers. Their kids give them cards.
Or father's day cards to my brothers... etc.. I know my mother doesn't give mother's day cards to any of her daughters or DILs.
I guess we just aren't big into the card thing - fortunately for me, so I never get offended.
I guess you're not a card person I give mother day cards to all who are mothers and involved in my life .. personally I think it is a sweet Gesture

If this makes you feel better, from the Parenting Board it seems to be a very popular gift this year- not just from in-laws but from hubands.

It makes me angry to be honest. As mothers we have so much on our shoulders! How can some people not acknowledge it on such a speacial day?!?!?!

Re: Just Thought I'd Share My Gift From My In-Laws
My MIL has said that "I" am not "HER" mother so why should she send me a card. I have never gotten a card from my own mother either. I personally think these holidays have gotten out of control. It used to be for the "mothers", not godmothers, caretakers, etc. Everyone wants to feel special, which is great but you need to leave the holiday for the mothers who have children. Sorry!

I totally agree. I'm not even officially a mom yet, I'm due in October, and I was sent cards from friends and family for the "Mother to be." My DH bought me a diamond baby bootie necklace, my parents bought me maternity clothes, my in-laws bought me some stuff for the baby and a book, and my sister and SIL bought me plants. Am I a mother to any of those people?! Obviously not, but they all wanted to make me feel special as I get closer and closer to motherhood.

Re: Just Thought I'd Share My Gift From My In-Laws
I would be disappointed also if I didn't get a card from them also considering the relationship we have. My ILs gave me a nice card with $50 bucks inside.

I didn't get anything... not even a phone call or a card! I must say it's pretty rude! We sent her cards from us and my son. Not anymore!

I agree with you and of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion. No, I am not a big card person and no one in my or DH's families are either. And no one should make me feel guilty for not giving cards to people I see no reason to give cards to. Or get from. Hallmark is loving this post right now...
ETA my family is kind and generous.

Re: Just Thought I'd Share My Gift From My In-Laws
I have learned that people do things VERY differently. DH's family is not a big card OR gift giving family. I now do the same for them. I got his mom something yesterday - but I did not get anything for his sisters - when last year I bought them all flowers and cards.
My family - I got all of my aunts and my grandmother gifts. My family is super kind and generous so I know that they truly appreciate the gifts. Growing up I got cards and gifts for even the smallest of holidays.
To each his own - but I do feel that when I have a child - I will truly be insulted if my MIL does not give me a card (which I can almost guarantee now that she won't)

The insulting part is that they have always done it and it's kind of a given. I know they are not obligated to do, but it has been tradition. I don't know, life goes on.

Re: Just Thought I'd Share My Gift From My In-Laws
Sorry Lady!
Hey if it makes you feel any better, I got a gift and a card from my MIL and nothing from my OWN mother. As a matter of fact, it even took a little bit of hinting to get her to say Happy Mother's Day to me on the phone!

Re: Just Thought I'd Share My Gift From My In-Laws
As I said if it is a tradition and they just stopped - yes I would be upset I am sure.
But considering my mom is 78 and didn't send my DH a birthday card, I don't get bent out of shape and neither does he. His mom doesn't even know my birthday and that's fine with me....
