absolutely. AA works wonders for the people who work it.

Re: Do u think an alcoholic of 30 yrs...
Maybe, it took my sister a couple of tries (once in rehab) and this last time she just went to meetings and has been clean now for over 100 days. It's going to be difficult though - if it's someone close they will need all your support.

I don't know if it could be "cured", as I don't think alcoholism is ever really "cured". But I think a person could be greatly helped and put on the road to recovery.

It also depends if it was their choice to rehab or if they were pushed into it by others. They need to want it - but AA really does provide a lot of support.

I don't think the years of being an alcholic are as much of an issue as the desire to change their life.
I think if someone has hit their bottom & admitted alcohol was a huge factor, it's a big step. Getting the support they need monring & night is essential.
A close relative of mine did it - no clinic, just AA - when they were 21. They've just celebrated 17 years this September.

I completely agree. A very close relative of mine had a major health scare and it was the wakeup call she needed. She had been drinking for at least 20 years and has been alcohol free for at least 3 years now. Actually, I don't think she even went to AA. She went to some outpatient therapy and had the desire to get better.

Re: Do u think an alcoholic of 30 yrs...
I have many people in my family who are alchoholics. I agree with the other posters in that you really have to want to stop drinking in order for the program to work.
I think it's possible!

that is absolutely false
in fact it a majority of the time it would DO NOTHING

I don't believe anyone can do it cold turkey on their own

Re: Do u think an alcoholic of 30 yrs...
They CANNOT just stop drinking one day if they are addicted to alcohol, this is dangerous! The withdrawel to alcohol can range from moderate illness to death, and the more addicted they are, the worse it can be. The person needs medication in addition to other treatment such as AA. A family doctor can be helpful with this, if you speak to them they will be able to point you in the right direction, prescribe medications, etc. I know in the past that there were people who quit cold turkey and lived to tell about, but we now know that the risk it too great and I am sure if people knew they wouldnt want to take the chance.
I thought at one time as most people, that herion and crack were bad addictions to stop cold turkey due to the withdrawel, but they wont kill you. Alcohol has that potential, and that is the scariest of all.
Alcohol Withdrawel
Whatever happens, I wish this person the best of luck!

Re: Do u think an alcoholic of 30 yrs...
I also thought that cold turkey could be dangerous in a way bc some alcoholics need some type for drug to get through de-tox ...plus Shouldnt u have medical care in case your body has a seizer form withdrawal...i Mean all this is possible ...

you don't necessarily need drugs to get through withdrawal...that is a person to person decision
But i do agree...I thnk that someone who is detoxing HAS to be watched by professionals

Re: Do u think an alcoholic of 30 yrs...
As someone who comes from an alcoholic family on ALL sides, I've seen different things. AA worked for some. Those who have done AA have been sober for over 30 years. For others, rehab was a bigger help. But some of those also had drug problems as well. And for others, nothing seems to be helping them. Not AA, not rehab, not clinics, not jail, not pleading, nothing... . And much of it comes with their DESIRE to get sober. If that isn't there, nothing will work.

She was asking if they could do it going to AA twice a day...if someone really wants to stop and goes to two meetings a day it may work for them. As I said, my sister has quit three times and this time she is ONLY going to AA and has stayed clean longer than ever before. She seems really committed this time and swears it's the AA that helps her. I think the sponsor is the biggest help. BTW, my ex-husband tried many times to quit on his own and never stuck to it. An alcoholic definitely needs some kind of support and/or help.

i understand what she is saying..
and i still think that an addict cannot quit cold turkey or do it on their own
especially in the beginning..
I did say that i thought they need to be under professional care during detox

Me too I also give my grandfather credit for quiting cold turkey ."god bless his soul" he passed on when i was a teenage he had liver failure and heart disease but even though he quit turkey he still died from what the doctor's said would kill him if he didn't stop drinking.
