Is it true that an earlier will make a baby sleep longer at night?

I've been about this online.

What time do your babies go to sleep and how old are they?

Also when your babies get up during the night is always for feedings or diaper changes?

When mine gets up he just sits there and babbles...

This is totally normal. At this stage, we have to teach our babies to put themselves back to sleep. If Jordana is up and just talking to herself or happily playing, I just leave her and she falls back asleep.

I wonder this too. My dd wakes up once in the middle of the night....I assume she wants to eat but maybe I will let her try to go back to sleep instead?? She is 2 months..what do you think?

Once we started to put DS to bed earlier he did sleep longer but only because he was going to be earlier, he wasn't sleeping later just getting up at the same time. He falls asleep between 6/6:30pm and he is up between 6 and 7am. He did get up twice last week but I think it was because he was sick and I did not feed him I just rocked him back to sleep. I also only go in if he starts to cry if he fusses or if he is talking to himself I just leave him and he falls asleep.

Mine won't go back to sleep. Once he is awake he thinks it's playtime. I quickly change his diaper and then have to soothe him back to sleep.

Re: Is it true that an earlier will make a baby sleep longer at night?

Mine is 3 months and can't put himself back to sleep.

Maybe he can once he gets older or maybe he's just one of those babies that has to be helped back to sleep...

He only started to put himself to sleep around 4 months. Give it some time and remember that all babies are different and it is trial and error and sometimes it takes time to figure out what they like by tring different tactticks.

I was just about to say the same thing.
Ali is 3 months, some nights she needs soothing and others she does it on her own, whether it be the middle of the night or when we put her down for the night.

I think 3 months is a little young to expect him to put himself back to sleep IMO and also to sleep through the night for long stretches. Sure some people get lucky and have babies that sleep through the night early on but it's not the norm. I was still waking up 2-3 times a night when DD was 3 months old.

Re: Is it true that an earlier will make a baby sleep longer at night?

Now my next question is does an earlier bedtime help decrease night wakings? Cuz I read that as well.

I think it all depends on the kind of sleeper your baby is. Mine is a very light sleeper. You never know how long he will sleep for. Is anyone else's baby like that?

Re: Is it true that an earlier will make a baby sleep longer at night?

DD goes down at 7pm and gets up at 7am...like clockwork.

If she goes to bed later she gets up later....for instance she went to sleep at 9pm on Friday and got up at 10am Saturday...she will always get 12 hours or more....but I know that isn't the norm with babies and sleeping

Re: Is it true that an earlier will make a baby sleep longer at night?

I would try the earlier bedtime thing but I'm afraid he'll only want to wake up earlier.

Re: Is it true that an earlier will make a baby sleep longer at night?

It may not work for all babies...

anyways he currently goes to bed at 9-10...maybe I should start with 8pm...

Also are 4 feedings a day at 6-7 ounces enough for the day for him?

Re: Is it true that an earlier will make a baby sleep longer at night?

I also read in that Weissbluth book that you should keep them awake for no longer than 2 hours from the last time they got up from a nap. What if they don't want to go down in 2 hours...does it have to be 2???

I think you have nothing to loose by trying to put him to bed earlier and if you don't try then you might not know if it will work. You also need to try it a few times to see if it works before giving up.

I don't know about that - Ali stays up for hours at a time, that is why she gets better naps. For instance she has been sleeping for over 3 hours now. She was up for 4 hours - before she took her nap.
I think you just need to see exactly what your little wants, it definitely takes practice and there are times you have no idea - but don't let other people tell you what your kid needs, you are the mommy - you will know.

DD is 5 ad half months old. She goes to sleep about 7:30, wakes up around 6:30-7:00. She's been doing this schedule since about 4 months.

Same here. DS does not fall asleep on his own.

This is correct-

Every baby is different- but generally every 2-3hrs you should put your baby down for a "nap"-

The goal is to put them down before they are overtired...

As far as the earlier bedtime-

I was afraid of an early wake-up- however that was not the case.... TO THIS DAY- he wakes up the same time- whether he goes to bed early or real late...

The whole theory behind putting a child to sleep earlier- is that if you are putting them down when they are overtired or too tired... it disrupts their sleep all night long...

If Ryan has a busy day with no naps... or goes to bed too late he will wake several times in the middle of the night... and he has been sleeping through the night- since the day I wrote the post I linked above (He was 3 months old)

Its important to have a night time routine...

OUrs was always: Bath, baby massage, bottle, bed....

(Still is- now just with a meal in their!!!)

If you have any questions feel free to FM

Re: Is it true that an earlier will make a baby sleep longer at night?

check this out

This is a wonderful chart- that has marked true for us Ryans entire 1st year..

If you do the math of your childs wake up time/bed time... plus the naps... it generally is every 2 hrs...
