spinoff to vegetarians and carnivores

if you are not yet married, do you think that if one is a vegetarian/vegan, the other should be? for example, if i am a vegetarian and fh is not, should he change b/c of me? and vise versa

Re: spinoff to vegetarians and carnivores

I don't think so, but I think you need to try to be respectful of one another. Like Fh knows I won't cook meat for him. He also know it really would make me sick to open my fridge and find a big hunk of raw meat next to my tofu, so we've agreed on some compromises. If he wants to eat meat, he has to cook it himself and keep it away from my food. Usually this amounts to him eating it outside of the house or eating it in frozen dinners. It doesn't bother him, because he's gotten used to less meat. Also, we're keeping the minifridge he had from college and when we're married, if he wants to have meat for any reason, he can keep in there where it won't bother me, and eat it on paper plates.

We don't go to this extent right now in his apt, but as long as it's kept sealed and away from my food I don't mind.

I don't think so. If one person really like meat, I don't think they should have to give that up just bc their spouse doesn't eat meat, although I think they should be sensitive to the situation.
In my case, DH doesn't eat any pork products, but I will. So, I don't bring it in the house, and I don't order it when we go out to eat together (bc then we can't share).

Re: spinoff to vegetarians and carnivores

I didn't make DH become vegetarian, but he cooks and purchases any meat that he wants to consume. It has its own compartment in the fridge and it can nly be cooked in certain pans with certain utensils. As I stated in the other post, I was lucky that DH was raised by a veg mom so he grew up with similar rules in his house. Honestly, he very rarely eats meat at home because I do most of the cooking.Chat Icon

no, but on a side note, I don't like when I hear that vegans force their eating habits on their children, especially because of milk!

Well, I'm debating this. I would like to raise my children as vegetarians, but I want to thoroughly consult with a nutritionist to make sure it is done in a completely healthy way and that the children are not deprived of essential nutrients.

vegans are very healthy children though....with childhood obesity on the rise, I could think of much worse things.

true. but I don't understand why they wouldn't allow their children to have milk. that IMO is an essential part of their growth.

I'm a vegetarian and my husband eats meat...I don't have a problem with his eating habits, and he doesn't mind mine as well.

many times, vegans are hugh advocates of breastfeeding. When reading up on it, it is recommended to breastfeed and pump for 2 years. Then they switch to soy. Their diets are compensated with the calcium and protein, as well as good fats and oils.

I'm not vegan, but you can get the vitamins and nutrients that are in milk in many other forms. Soy and rice milk are the first things that come to my mind.

I don't think that raising your child with your own beliefs is that unusal. If you are kosher then your child will be raised kosher, if you are catholic then you will raise your child catholic. I think the difficult part is that when the child is old enough to make their own decisions living with what they choose if it is different from you. My DH was raised vegetarian until he was old enough to make the decision for himself. When he decided that he loved meat and dairy then his mom allowed those things.

I don't think they need to change their eating habits but they shouldn't expect their SO to have to cook meat.

your reposnse about children and obesity has me thinking. you definitely have an excellent point! that can really harm a child, and not just health-wise.

I was a veggie for two years and I wouldn't expect that my SO changed his eating habits for me. Dh likes to eat exotic foods and I despise it. But I wil not chnage my eating habits for him and he won't do it for me. I think it's cool that we're enjoy to eat different things. Chat Icon

Re: spinoff to vegetarians and carnivores

My best friend is a vegetarian and her DH is a big meat eater. They have no issues. She will even cook meat for him, as she has for me. She's actually pretty good too! She did feed her children meat although she was very sad when her pediatrician gave the okay. As it turns out, her daughters don't like red meat so they'll probably wind up being full-blown vegitarians one day too.

I don't eat dairy, red meat or pork - there is absolutely no reason why DH shouldn't enjoy a burger, bacon or skim milk in his cereal.

I would not expect DH to change that eating habit to suit me.

My friends fiancee is vegetarian, and she does not expect him to stop eating meat for her.

No, absolutely not. They should be able to co-exist with their differences in eating choices happily. I think that it's fine if a vegetarian doesn't want to cook meat for their spouse but sometimes people impose alot of demands on others to meet their special needs or nutrition requirements and that's where I think it gets unfair.

For example, I think for a meat eating wife to demand that her veggie DH cook meat for her is unfair. But to ask him to buy meat when he's out at the grocery store, is not. I think both sides have to compromise.

Unlike my cousin and her BF. He is vegetarian and he has basically forced her to become one also. I know she loves to eat meat because when they broke up for a short time she went right back to it, and then quit again when they got back together. He says that he refuses to kiss her if she ate meat because it's disgusting. Chat Icon

I mean no offense but I have to ask - for the vegetarians that won't allow meat to be cooked in the same pans and using the same utensils, what is the reasoning behind that? I just think forcing your SO to eat off of a paper plate just because they are eating something you don't like (or chose not to eat) sounds like a bit much.

Soy Milk & Rice Milk

Post on Parenting

Given the fact that Rice Milk & Soy Milk do not provide the all of nutrients babies need to grow, not to mention the fact that there is no mention of DHA which is essential to brain development, IMO, vegans should make damn sure they breastfeed.

I know I never said that I make him eat off a paper plate.Chat Icon I do seperate out the pans because pans especially non stick pans or castinron skillets collect the jucies of what is cooked in it over time. We have a lot of utensils and plates so we just seperate them out. I am actually most concerned with the pans. If he uses one of my plates or a forks I wouldn't have a fit.

Re: spinoff to vegetarians and carnivores

I'm a vegetarian who eats fish (pesce-vegetarian Chat Icon) and my DH eats meat. However he doesn't eat it at home - unless we're BBQ'ing - not at my request he's just considerate. I also think he's secretly appreciative b/c before me his cholesterol was high (and it runs in his family) and now it's at 150! Chat Icon

So to answer your question, while I would love for him to be vegetarian, it is not something I've ever pushed on him...nor do I think it should be.

I didn't read the entire Soy & Rice Milk article but does it address enriched Soy milk?

Most people are lactose intolerant and if you're not absorbing enough Vit C, you're not absorbing the D that you need. Humans don't digest animal-based protein as easily as they digest plant-based protein and as a result if their diet is mostly animal-based, they are not getting the nutrients they need.

That's exactly what we are doing. We had a long talk with our pediatrician. He told us it's perfectly ok to raise your child vegetarian as long as you supplement with sufficient vitamins and protein. He did, however, warn us that raising our daughter as a vegan is more dangerous and requires significant consultation with a nutritionist and monitoring. For those reasons, we will raise our daughter as a vegetarian (eating fish) but will provide as much dairy as her body requires. When she gets older, if she chooses to eat meat, she's more than welcome to do so outside of the home, and inside the home she'll have to prepare it herself, and use separate cookware.
