I don't believe that just because you were raised one religion means that you aren't allowed to explore and assimilate other religions into your life. I don't see religion in such black and white terms. One religion may cover all the bases for some, but others need to explore and study multiple religions. Sometimes a blend of them is what they feel serves their life best. Jen isn't just deciding to where a symbol of a faith that she likes. It seems as if she has a deep conection with both of these religions and wants to express it.

Just curious why you asked for opinions, if you are so confident in your beliefs?

I was curious about what other people thought, not to change my beliefs, but I was wondering if it would offend people, or what people would think when they saw it. It would be really personally menaingful to me, but I've never seen anyone wear it before, so I didn't know what kkind of messgae it would send to a general populace. Doesn't mean it would change my decision to get it or not get it. But I wanted to know what people would think when they saw it.

ETA: If people said "I find that completely offensive" then I might rethink it. My intention is not to shock or offend. I don't want to hurt my jewish friends in any way.

jenn,

the bottom line is that this is what you want to do, you should do it. This is about you and what you want. Who really cares what anyone else thinks. I can respect you wanting opinions, but they really shouldn't sway you one way or the other.

The bottom line here is you would actually rethink it if people found it offensive. If you felt that strongly about it, you really wouldnt care what other people thought. You actually would let the opinions of others sway you, and to me, that shows me that you really do NOT feel that strongly about it. When someone is determined, and really believes in something, they do not care about the opinions of others. They go with what THEY feel, and say FU to everyone else.

Understand what I am saying?

I see what you mean in terms of wearing something & being unsure about the faith or not. I don't think that's the question. What I took Jennifer's post as was asking if either faith (Catholic & Jewish) would be offended by a symbol. In which case my answers is there is always going to be someone that you're offending. Can't please everyone - so it's easier to stop trying.

No, I'm curious about why you think it's dishonest.

I was completely undecided about the GTG. I don't know that many people.

If I go I will wear my Tiffany "J" :-P

Jenn, first, please come to the GTG! You know me!

Second, I've seen jewelry like that before, and I always assume that the person wearing it has interfaith beliefs, as you do. The first time I saw one as a child, I was very confused by it, but I don't find it offensive. If it's something you want to wear, then go for it.

It seems like a perfect piece for you!

My coworker is a devote Catholic and wears the Star of David (he actually have it sticking out his collar by his tie, so it is seen). Someone asked him about it and he said: Jesus was a Jew, so am I.

It makes perfect sense in your situation. Wear it in good health!

Jennifer,

I have been looking for a piece like that for a while now. But, every piece I saw was bulky and I am looking for a dainty piece.

I would wear it to represent my union with my husband. It didnt even cross my mind that it would be JFJ symbol. Interesting. But, I wouldn't really care what other people thought b/c I know why I am wearing the piece. And my friends and family wouldnt be offended either.

FYI, I was brought up Catholic and DH Jewish. Dating/Marrying my husband has enriched my Christianity. I have learned so much from the Jewish religion that I have embraced it.

On the otherhand, I could understand why Jewish Women wouldn't wear the jewelry and I wouldn't expect them too. As a Christian, I would be totally comfortable wearing the piece because of the fact that Christianity stems from Judiasm. (not the other way around)

Re: No flames please: Help me anticipate what kind of responses I'd get wearing something like this

That's how I feel about it Juju.

Asking for opinions doesn't mean I don't feel strongly about wearing the piece or what it would mean to me, but not having been raised Jewish, and being a much more liberal catholic than most I could not anticipate how other people would view it. I know that typology and the ways in which christianity is said to supercede judaism can be a touchy subject for some jewish people, as is assimilation, and not being raised in a jewish culture, these are views I respect but cannot fully understand. As much as I feel conviction, I wanted to make sure that my Jewish friends would not find it offensive in some way. I could find another less offensive symbol if that were the case, because it's not the symbol itself that I feel strongly about, but what it represents to me.

ETA: for another example, I'm catholic, but choose not to wear a crucuifix. If anything, I wear a celtic cross. It doesn't mean my faith is shaky, I just choose a different symbol.

it's not the beliefs I'm worried about, but the symbol.

I could find another synbol if this were offensive

ETA; especially because I'm in some ways appropriating a symbol that doesn't belong to my faith. I'm more worried about the jewish side than christian. If christian people have a problem, I'll just say "Jesus was a jew, get over it" Chat Icon

And I care what people think not about my beliefs but about what wold hurt them. If Jackie or Leslie or another one of my Jewish friends saw it and was hurt by it, that would bother me. I'm glad most people are not finding it offensive, because I really like it Chat Icon

Honestly Jen, if you're more worried about reactions from your Jewish friends, I wouldn't wear it. Or I would definitely get a symbol that didn't incorporate a cross with a Star of David.
Although not every Jewish person who responded on here said they find it offensive, pretty much all of them said they'd never wear it, and most said it reminded them of a JFJ symbol.
As a Jewish woman who's been preached to by JFJ, I find it offensive. JMHO.

Re: No flames please: Help me anticipate what kind of responses I'd get wearing something like this

Thanks for the honest opinion Michal. Are you offended by it as a symbol, or mainly because of the JFJ association?

I can sort of deal with people thinking I'm JFJ, because I'm not, and I can tell them as much, and I'm not proseletyzing.

ETA: I think the JFJ wear teh fish on the star of david.

ETA: Apparently there's an entire movement of Christianity called "Hebrew Christians" who idenitfy as Christians but recognize and connect to Jewish roots and rituals. Sort of the flip side of messianic Jews.

I guess a little of both - if that makes sense. Def. the JFJ angle, but also just from a personal philosophy. When I think about all the Jewish people throughout history who were persecuted and murdered and how they did not run and stood up for what they believed in so I could be a Jewish woman today - I just feel that it's a symbol that should stand alone.

Hi Jenn,
First off - I'd like to say that you should wear what you want if it has a meaning to you. I think too many people are concerned about how others perceive things. Now that I said that, I'd like to answer that question you asked. I am actually offended by it as a symbol. As a Jew I feel that the blending of the two symbols does as you want - blend the religions, but in my eyes there is no blending. As you said a few pages earlier the whole messiah thing is something we do not have in common nor do we believe in the holy trinity. With such different theological foundational beliefs - as a jew - it does bother me. If I saw someone wearing this in shul I would be totally shocked.

NOTE: I know you do not want to offend your friends with this and maybe what you should do is ask them to see what they think about it and if it does bother them.

I have never been one to wear religious jewelry in the first place. I think it is beautiful and a lovely showpiece to show the unity between your interfaith marriage. While religion is an extremely sensitive topic and you probably will offend some if you wear it, I think you need to do what you feel you want to do and what would make you happy
