I think this goes back to better education regarding sex.
I think this is the key - better education. For the children AND the parents. Educate the parents on the possibility of unsafe abortions, and everything else that endangers their child that comes along with improper, and lack of, communication. IMO that's where the concentration should be, not in medical emancipation for this one particular issue.

When the woman spoke, did she say or admit that she would have beaten or thrown out her daughter for coming to her with the news?
Lisa I totally thought the same thing !!! I mean there was obviously an issue with the communication between them. I think instead of speaking against the law she should be speaking about the communication between parents and children.
I agree! Communication is number one.
But what about the families that don't have good communication? We all know someone who comes from a family like that. It doesn't even have to be violent. Some parents just don't open the line of communications. What appens to those girls in those families?
This law just compounds that fear and takes away one of the two safe options (which are having the baby or having a safe abortion).

see I dont know how I feel about this...
Maybe it dates back to the lifestories familys in crisis thing for me  Seriously though, This girl needed to have parent consent and she couldnt do it so she went to an ilegal place and they used dirty instruments and she got an infection and died the next day 
I honestly can say if I had gotten pregnant before being married I thing I would have run away from home my mom would KILL ME! Im married and I dread the day that I have to tell her

MY GREATEST fear would be that this would happen multiple times and could lead to serious consquences that a CHILD may not care about at that time

But to be honest All abortions are not always safe ... I know Back alley is a butcher factory but I think parents should be involved...Just because it is not a back alley(not literally) doesn't mean it is safe ... I would want to be notified I want to be invovled in my childs welfare and I would also want my child in some sort of therapy .. this is not an issue that you just go in and your out there can be depression .....and so on how would I know ??

Growing up my mom always said to tell her blah blah blah and that she would be upset but she would help and blah blah blah... She never said she would beat me or disown me I just would be scared to upset her and tell her.
Also in NY do you need parent permision I didnt think you did

I'm torn on this issue. As a parent, I want to know what medical procedures are being done on my child -and do not want to jeopardize my right to know that by allowing legislation to differentiate between medical procedure & an abortion. I think they are one & the same.
As we all do, I want my daughter to have access to the best health care. Given the chance that she would consider anything otherwise, I have to err on the side of NO parental consent required.
Yes in a perfect world, I'd have the relationship with my daughter where she'd come to me. However even when you have the best relationship, there are somethings your kid just can't talk to you about - and their failures are one of them. I think this is where I hope the godmother or her aunts will step in. They are there to advise my children as I would want them advised without the worry of me finding out.
I would even suggest "adult consent" -so anyone over 18 can sign for them. While I worry I'm going to have a 16 year old looking for an abortion - I've even more petrified of a 12 or 13 year old having one.

I agree the key is better education and communication ---- it's hard to make a law to do those two things though. It's easier to make a law regulating a medical procedure than to make a law about parenting.

Alabana
Alaska (for those under the age of 17)
Arizona
Arkansas
Colorado
Idaho
Indiana
Kentucky
Louisiana
Maine (can be parent or adult family member)
Massachusetts
Michigan
Mississippi
Missouri
North Carolina
Pennsylvania
Rhode Island
South Carolina (for those under the age of 17)
Tennessee
Wisconsin (can be parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle or sibling over the age of 25)
In these states you need parental notification:
Delaware (if under 16 - one parent, one grandparent or a mental health professional must be told 24 hours before a teen abortion)
Florida (a pregnant girl under eighteen must notify her parent or legal guardian before terminating a pregnancy - unless an exception applies or she seeks a judicial bypass of the parental notification requirement)
Georgia (requires one parent being told 24 hours before a teen abortion)
Iowa (requires telling one parent or grandparent 48 hours before a teen abortion)
Kansas
Minnesota (requires both parents being told 48 hours before a teen abortion)

I am for the law. I think when a child gets an abortion, her parents have a right to know. When a child is having unprotected sex, an intervention needs to be set into play. I think the parents should also attend a counseling session or 2 to learn how to deal with their sexually active teen and how to help her on her road to recovery.

I would be okay with this too...I would prefer no consent be required-I agree with most of what the other posters have said-I wouldn't want my child to be sooo afraid to tell me that they did something crazy.
I think that being able to talk to a medical professional about being pregnant, or even just to see if you are pregnant is important for a teenager in that situation, what I mean to say is, I wouldn't want them to be afraid of the doctors, and hospitals, to be afraid to go and talk to a counselor, for fear that they would tell thier parents....I don't know if I am making any sense....

NO!
To be honest, obviously a bad decision was made, BUT it is NO WAY teh girls parents to make the decsion for her.
eta: i can also see this as where the girl will be scared to death to tell her parents and then put it off and then abort a 2nd trimester baby. and THAT is worse.
IMO, the girl is dealing with ENOGH, now lets worry her with telling her parents and what htey will do

I think this issue starts way before the abortion stage. One thing I discovered after I got pregnant and had a miscarriage was how little we are taught about our bodies. There are ways to tell when you are fertile or not. My Mom, teachers, friends even my Dr had never shared this info with me. I think we are doing a great disservice to all these girls out there who have no idea how their bodies work. I feel like no matter how well you raise your children unfortunately everyone is given the opportunity to have sex in high school. Some take it and some don't. The ones that do, I don't think are bad kids just caught up in that popularity and wanting boys to like them. When I have children I am going to encourage them not to have sex but I am also going to teach them how to protect themselves if they do. I think a lot of parents give the abstinence talk and then stick their heads in the sand hoping for the best
