Re: Anyone watching Oprah?
I met that woman!!!! She is a 9-11 widow who blew through several millions of dollars of her settlement money and is now virtually bankrupt... as of 9-11 of this year she only had 50K left!!
She lives in the Northport area and goes to my nail salon. I saw her on the Suze Orman show on Sept. 11 and was SHOCKED!!!
It didn't surprize me so much because when I met her I got the feeling she was trying to fill the void of losing her husband by spending A LOT (over 9 million dollars I think??) of money. She was driving a top of the line Mercedes convertible and was just returning from one vacation and leaving a few days later for another.
While I feel terrible that she lost her husband she acted very irresponsibly considering she has children.
There are so many people out there who have holes in their heart and they are trying to fill it up with material possession

Re: Anyone watching Oprah?
Wow, even her daughter is having that problem. I have to say that many people try to fill voids with various things and I am sure there are many people who would have or have done similar to what she has done- maybe not to the same extent . . . .

Re: Anyone watching Oprah?
Ah.... she just said it... there was a hole in her soul and she tried to fill it by spending the money and giving a lot of it away.
She might also feel like the settlement is "blood money". When my mom died in an accident I got a much smaller settlement and I always looked at it as blood money... that only through violence and irresponsibility by a drunk driver did I come across that money.
I'd like to think I turned a neg. into a pos. by taking the money and getting my MS degree.
She really needs psychological counseling more than anything.

Yes, but she has taken settlement money that was meant to provide for the financial security for her and her kids (due to the loss of wages of her husband over a lifetime) and basically squandered it! She did "spend" some of it on the house which will appreciate in value but $4K on a Fendi bag And she allowed her 23 year old daughter to squander most of her individual settlement money... for crying out loud the kid could have bought a house, paid for grad school.
They are SCREAMING out for help. They are deeply depressed. This is really no different from someone taking drugs or drinking for a prolonged period of time after a loved one dies.
They are trying to heal their depression with material possessions but you can't do that... no material possessions will bring back their father/husband and then they will have to buy more... it's a viscious cycle. They really need counseling... the shopping is a suface symptom of a much deeper problem.

Re: Anyone watching Oprah?
I feel bad- but this woman really screwed up the future for her and her children. I am not watching it, but what does she want? More $$???? Sympathy? Anyone who lost someone dear to them deserves sympathy- whether its 9/11, a car accident, cancer or something else. She had the potential to have the future that most peopel can dream about- financial security- and she spent it away.
I also lost my dad- not in 9/11- but he is gone nonetheless. I was not given any $ to deal wtih his death, but I still had to deal with it. My mom was in such grief- to this day she has no recollection of anything that happened the year after he died. I was a senior in college and planned on going to law school- so what did I do? I sent out my applications (granted on the last day possible), got into law school and went. My sister was a freshman in college and wanted to come home and drop out of school. instead, she continued on and got her BA and masters in 5 years on a full scholorship. Our mom was a teacher and dad didn't leave us with any $- and someone stole his business- but none of us had the strength to fight it, so we had to manage on our own. I paid for law school and living expenses on my own and got a job after my first year of law school so I worked and went to school.
I feel bad for this woman, but we have to live with the choices we make. I woudl have loved to spend all my $ on things- but I didn't have that luxury. She made her bed, now she has to lie in it. I know that may sound harsh- but maybe she needed to hit rock bottom to start dealing with the loss. I just hope no one bails her out. She needs to learn this on her own- and obviously she needs some tough lessons to fix herself and her family.

I agree... A part of me feel bad but a big part of me doesn't
I think she has had four years now to deal with this her way... NOW for the sake of her children it is time to deal with her grief the RIGHT way. And she didn't look like she was going to do that SHe just looked like she was blaming and talking about the dumbest crap....

Exactly.
I know I can't completely understand how she feels, but her children are now suffering - she needs to change her way of life and be there for her children.

Re: Anyone watching Oprah?
What was endearing yet sooo sad was to listen to her daughter talke to her, reaching out to her ....but so sad that her mother didn't seem to listen AT ALL.
In fact i would think the mother thought she was on a completely different show entirely

Re: Anyone watching Oprah?
my friends brother in law died in 911 (fireman) and his wife was given a lot of money- the checks just kept on coming in- she also had done the same thing- she sold her house and movedinto a brand new one- spent $$ on getting it redone- bought a new car- new stuff for her son- yet she is still miserbale and dealing with the loss. she chooses to deal with it through spending the money...

Re: Anyone watching Oprah?
It's her perogative to squander money from life insurance or savings, it's appalling that she spent contributions that people made or gov't assistance on crap. Money donated and gov't help should have automatically been put in a trust for ALL of the children who lost parents. It also should have been equally divided among all families.
I am sad for her bc I can't image the pain she and her kids have endured losing the father in that way. But while watching the show.... I wanted to say "Pick yourself up and move on." Remember and honor his memory by living your life and being a role model for the children. Get help so you can sort out the emotional pain.
