I think something is wrong with my baby - UPDATED

So yesterday we made *some* progress. Alex slept from 8am-10am and then again from 1:30pm-3pm, but that's only because I held her and rocked her the whole time. But, at 7pm, when we tried to put her to sleep, all hell broke loose. She literally wailed at the top of her lungs from 7pm-11:30pm, until she finally fell asleep. She would start screaming bloody murder if I tried to nurse her, which is so unlike her because it has always been her number one source of comfort. She wailed so much that her voice became hoarse Chat Icon I used the orajel and the tylenol and it didn't seem to help. I've tried using Mylecon, but to no avail. She would calm down for a little while if I held her and walked her around the room, but she kept wimpering the whole time. The good thing is she did sleep for 5 hours when we finally put her to sleep, and she woke up at 4:30am for only 15 minutes to eat and now she's back asleep again. But, what's with the wailing?? I just cannot believe that teething would make her this miserable Chat Icon I'm calling the doctor's office this morning and bringing her in... I'm worried there's something else going on here.

Re: I think something is wrong with my baby

Have you eaten anything different? I have ot tell you, my oldest daughter was really bad with her teething, she cried constantly and I swore something was relly wrong with her, the docs couldn't find anything and chalked it up to teething, and wouldn't ya know, a week later that little tooth made it';s appearance. Teething is VERY painful for some kids, I heard for 1stborn kids it's worse because there are less distractions, hang int here, it is probably all normal stuff, you may just have a little girl who is more sensitive to pain.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: I think something is wrong with my baby

This started happening with Bryan around the 3 month mark when he was diagnosed with the reflux and milk protein allergy- poor little guy was getting bad heartburn. He would wail when I tried nursing also because eating gave him discomfort. He wasnt really spitting up too much in the beggining but then he started spitting up alot. He would also wail when we put him down because reflux is worse laying down, I dont know if this is the same situation but this is what I went thru with him.

Well, the doctor visit was useless. Of course little Alex who is the devil at home, becomes a complete angel with other people. She flashed a nice big smile to the doc and so she thinks there's no problem. She examined her and found nada... she thinks it's just teething. I just really, really hope these teeth come out soon before I lose my sanity Chat Icon

Re: I think something is wrong with my baby - UPDATED

if you think something else may be wrong other then teething, stick with your instincts. doctors sometimes think first time moms are neorutic. personally i will never doubt myself again. when my dh was 2 months old she had a terrible terrible cold and cough. not your everyday thing at all. after numerous attempts to explain to my doctor that something is terribly wrong, i switched doctors, it turned out my dd had RSV a potentinally fatal disease if not treated. she was in the hospital for one week. and thank god, i followed my instints. but on the other had, it does sound like your little one may just be teething. my dd started teething in july and didnt get a tooth till sept!! so wait a little more. but if instincts tell you something different, go with them.

I completely agree with following your instincts - and am glad you're switching doctors.

Have any of us had a baby that was awake EVERY HOUR from teething? ? Keep in mind Alex is just over 3 months old.
At 5 months, Joseph got multiple teeth in all at the same time and cried, but did sleep. It could be just that my 2 weren't like Alex and that she is overly sensitive but only you can be the judge of that.

She is going through diapers so it's not that she isn't eating enough. Is she trying to bite her hands?

The problem is I LOVE my doctor, but anytime I have an emergency visit, they stick me with this young, inexperienced dopey woman. I might just call my doc tomorrow and let him know that I refuse to see this chick again, and that I want to bring Alex in to see him right away. She has started sleeping again, albeit not like before. Yesterday she took two 2 hour naps, and slept from 11:30pm-4:30am, and then for another 2 hours after that. So she's not up all the time anymore. It's just impossible to get her to sleep. Once 7pm rolls around (her normal bedtime) all hell breaks loose and she starts wailing. She's drooling like there's no tomorrow and she continually bites on her hands, on her shirt, on my fingers. When I'm changing her she literally grabs my arm and pulls it into her mouth and starts biting on it. I put my knuckle in her mouth yesterday to see if she would go for it and she clamped down so hard that it hurt a little. So, I definitely think it is teething. It might just be particularly bad because she's just coming out of an incredibly long and arduous growth spurt on top of it.

Have you ever heard of the witching hour? For us it was 6-7pm. The time when our baby would flip out & destress from their day.

Is it possible that she's just overtired (on top of obvious teething) ?? Could you try putting her down at 6pm to see if that's better?

WEll from you your saying it all sounds like teething but if your not happy with the woman doctor that your seeing when you call for an appointment I would ask to see the regular doctor instead.

I know my Dr. office ask me if I prefer a dr. even if its an emergency cuz they have a few in.

Also for the teething have you tried wetting a wash cloth and putting it in the freezer and when its frozen and cold give it to her for her to chew on it feels good on the gums cuz its cold and it will numb the gums as well. Just a suggestion it worked wonders for Marissa

I hope those teeth pop out soon and you both can get some sleep

Before you described her biting behavior, I was going to suggest that maybe she has an ear infection. But, I hope your pediatrician would have found that!Chat Icon

It could definitely be teething...my daughter cut her first two teeth at 7 weeks oldChat Icon and YES - it was INSANITY around here before they broke through.Chat Icon

Ryan use to go to bed between 10-12Chat Icon and every night starting between 8-9 it was crazy around here...and we have rough nights....I couldnt beliee he'd be ready to go to bed that early..but sure enough I started putting him to bed @ 8...and he was a different child...

Then we were going through this..I wake up @ 3am and dont go back to sleep thing...

I took Callas advice and put him to be when he got sleepy which was 7...and we had a great night!!!!

Maybe she overtired????
