Re: Is anyone planning to go to Ground Zero today
I don't feel the need to go to Ground Zero in order to pay tribute to those that lost their lives there. I have never been one to visit gravesites and that sadly is what Ground Zero is to me.

I live in another state, but even if I didn't, I wouldn't go. I am not ready.

Re: Is anyone planning to go to Ground Zero today
I hear what you guys are saying about being offended by people who put Ground Zero among other tourist traps. It is my hope they want to see it to reflect and pay respects, not to "see something." There is nothing to see. It's all been cleaned up and what remains are the spirits and souls of those who lost their lives.
I think some people are just sick and want to see it just to see it. I have mixed feelings about it, too. My close friend used to live in the apartment buildings across the street and everyday, people line up there. If someone comes here and wants to go there to pay respect, fine. I just don't like it listed among the Empire State Building and all that stuff.

Re: Is anyone planning to go to Ground Zero today
I have been there twice since 2001, and I don't feel the need to go back there. It is very sad... I can remember the day and honor the people that were lost without visiting the site.
One thing that always gets me is how I never went to the world trade center while it was standing, so I never saw it in its glory, only the footprints that remain

I used to go by there every now and then when I worked down there. I used to go and see my friend's name on the wall.

Re: Is anyone planning to go to Ground Zero today
This is the first year I'm not working in Manhattan. I used to commute from LI, but the last year I was commuting from Hoboken. Taking the path everyday into WTC was shocking for the first few months but became desensitizing after a while. Coming up from the train level and seeing all the tourists taking pictures, etc. just had a weird feeling.
However, I am kind of sad that this is the first anniversary I won't be back there.

Re: Is anyone planning to go to Ground Zero today
It's actually harder for me to go to my HS 3 long blocks away and not be in the shadow of the towers than it is to see a hole in the ground. I can't really fathom or understand it. It's harder for me to see it in relation to what used to be there, KWIM?
I have to say I did shop at the WTC a lot and I did get to go to the observation deck, but FH always regrets never taking me to windows on the world, which we always dreamed we would do when we were dating in HS.

I don't really feel a need to go there, and I get really annoyed by tourists who snap pictures, etc. It's NOT a tourist attraction
I agree. Would those people take pictures of a cemetary?

It would be nice if people had a place to go to remeber, but that is all tied up in the political arena.

My bus went right past it. It is a madhouse. Protesters and everything all over the place.
You don't necessarily have to go there to pay your respects.
That is horrible that there would be protesters

You could say the same for Pearl Harbor. It became a tourist attraction. I was there in February and people, (including myself) were snapping away. I am sure that NYC sees more people than the island of Oahu. People could not access Hawaii then (or even now) as easily as they can access New York City today. So of course there would be more people taking pictures today and now. Perhaps, it is a person's way of holding on to a piece of history as opposed to morbidity. There was nothing like being there.
Im also going to say that 9-11 is still very new and raw for us. Because so many of us were directly or indirectly affected by this horrible tragedy in serious ways, we are simply not ready for Ground Zero to be treated the way the USS Arizona is. However, one day, this event will be in our children's history books and if I am fortunate enough to be living in NY then, I will surely bring my children to what will hopefully be some sort of memorial and tell them what it was like to be living at that time. If we teach our children, then they will never forget and events like this wont be swept under the table. JMO.
