The Public Demanded It: The Captain's Snow Vent
You all asked for it....
OK, so every winter, we get some snow
And every year there are a gazillion threads about it:
I Hate Snow Snow Days Will the Schools Be Closed Etc.
My question is ( and I'm honestly not trying to be a smart azz) -- when did we become so afraid of snow and use it as an excuse to get out of work??
People, snow is FROZEN WATER.
Now I know the drivers are gonna flame me, but here are my perceptions.
-- Unless public transportation is closed, you really have no excuse. The only excuse I can see is if you have ABSOLUTELY no way to get to a train station. But if you can walk or take a bus to a train, you should do that.
-- If you have to drive, I know it is a pain, but you CAN drive in bad weather. We do it in rain all the time. All it means is that you drive extra carefully. And in most cases, if you are driving on heavily populated roads (highways), the snow doesn't accumulate much because everyone is driving on it. Just go slow to avoid sliding. If it's REALLY bad (i.e. a blizzard) then I can see offering to work from home (if you can), or making arrangements to stay close to the job.
-- Most companies, on bad weather days, don't care what time you get in, but DO appreciate the effort. So, if you get in at 10, it's not the end of the world. It looks good when you make it in (especially when others don't). Or, you can simply venture out earlier.
-- Finally, the above opinions do not apply to those who are pregnant. I agree, in bad weather, if you feel you will have a hard time getting around, you should stay put. Also, if you have kids and their school is closed and no one else can watch them, that's a separate circumstance also.
There you have it. Enjoy rebutting and offering opinions

I wish I could do that (being pregnant...) but I can't stay home.
A couple of weeks ago the LIRR made an announcement at my station that the train was late due to the fact that it was very WINDY...windy?!?!?!?!? So...I'm anxious to see what kind of service we get tomorrow.

It's funny that you bring this up...my boss was just telling me that her mom aka her sitter told her this morning that she doesn't know if she'll make it in due to the snow. My boss' reply..."You get in your car and drive slowly like the rest uf us!"

then knowing that service may be slow/delays, i would leave earlier to go to work, or just be late. Most companies expect delays and appreciate the effort

Like work I hate when there is a task or project for me to do I say I am not going to do it (Rebellious Teen ???) but I ALWAYS do it my coworkers laugh

Re: The Public Demanded It: The Captain's Snow Vent
Well for me, working in Manhattan means there is NEVER any valid excuse to not get to work. Doesn't even matter if its nearly a blizzard, as long as there is SOME form of public transporation running, I gotta be here. And my office never closes under any circumstances (we are an international lawfirm, it just does not happen)
WHAT DOES get my goat though is that inevitably, half my coworkers will not even make the attempt to get in, and for those of us who DO get here , its as if we only get dumped on worse. I really resent that I killed myself to make it in (from "upstate" no less, where the weather is usually worse ) and then those people who live a subway ride away claim they could not dig out from the snow. That is total BS
NOT to mention I get stuck doing all their friggin work, so really its alwyas a lose-lose situation for me
Hence the reason I get kind of p*ssy when I hear people say that off the bat, no matter if its a dusting or a blizzard, they are NOT going to even TRY to get to work (this is not counting the pregnant ladies of the world, I agree, that is a diff. situation entirely)
End vent

Re: The Public Demanded It: The Captain's Snow Vent
I might have some trouble, but I'd have to try to take the bus I guess (though I dont think I've ever taken the bus from my neck of the woods, I'm not even sure if they are part of the MTA or how that works )

Arent the busses going to be out of commission too? I'm dreading this possible strike. I'd either have to walk from Queens or walk from Penn to my building, both are really long.

Maybe you can send this little mission statement to the MTA... if they go to work I'll be able to get to my job ontime this winter.
And the argument about leaving earlier doesn't usually help... the early trains are delayed as well, so you're still stuck either waiting in a cramped room where degenerates feel the need to urinate on the walls, or you're standing on a platform 20 feet above the ground freezing your a$$ off.
Certain train lines are worse in the winter than others... I am on the Long Beach Branch.. seeing as how the train needs to go over a narrow railway over the water makes it all the more difficult for it to be ontime when it's windy, raining, or snowing...
Here's my warning.. I'll be b*tching about snow this winter, so if it annoys you... don't read it...

Re: The Public Demanded It: The Captain's Snow Vent
Honestly - I'm not going to lie -- When the snow starts coming down I am PRAYING that I don't have to come to work.
IMO - the LIRR s*cks when it's nice out - when there is bad weather the commute is awful. There are always delays and you are standing on the platform freezing your butt off. THEN - coming home at night is complete craziness. The trains are packed - you have to take 20 minutes to clean off/defrost your car. It is a huge pain in the butt!!!
Before I had a truck my car was REALLY bad in the snow -- even the 10 minute ride to the train took 30 minutes. I would rather work from home and call it a day.
AND - if I do come to work I will be complaining all day long.
