Re: HELP!! GOing food shopping tonight for the first time...
Try and plan out your meals for the week:
Chopped Meat - you can make hamburgers, meatloaf, salsbury steak, etc.
London Broil - grilled or bbq'd
Chix Cutlets
Pork Chops
Sweet/hot sausage with pasta and sauce
Then pick up some side dishes. This is how I shop.

Re: HELP!! GOing food shopping tonight for the first time...
Try buying a package of chicken cutlets and freezing them in small packages- this way you can defrost them one at a time as you need them. There is a lot you can do with chicken cutlets- cut them up to make stir fry, bread them for chicken parm, etc...

Definately the basics...Also some spices like basil, oregano, garlic...Do you like chicken? That is easy to make. Get some eggs & bread crumbs too
Get some snack foods too. You always needs items to nosh on. Frozen items are good too bc you they don't go bad.

Re: HELP!! GOing food shopping tonight for the first time...
A good way to start accumulating non necessities like spices and condiments is to have a couple of recipe's in mind when you go to the store. Then you buy the ingredients that you need for those specific recipe's along with the basics. Eventually you will find that you have a stocked pantry.
I think the thing that I use the most is Olive Oil.
I still have not gotten buying the right amount of food down....Some weeks I feel like I've spent $100 and still have nothing to eat and other weeks I end up throwing a ton if stuff away!

Definitely chicken cutlets - there are so many things you can do with them. Besides the milk, eggs, bread basics:
Bread crumbs Olive Oil Vinegar Soy/Terriaki Sauce Ketchup/Mayo/Mustard Sugar (white, brown or both) Salt/Pepper Rice Pasta Potatoes Frozen Veggies Salad Ingrediants Other meats: Sausage, Pork Chops, Steaks

Re: HELP!! GOing food shopping tonight for the first time...
My mom gave me a cookbook "The New Cook Book - Bridal Edition" and it tells you the basic pantry Must Haves:
Flour Baking powder, baking soda, and cornstarch Canned and dried beans Brown and granulated sugars Garlic Nonstick spray Herbs and spices Broth or bullion cubes Rice Variety of pasta Salsa Oils (veg, olive, sesame) Vinegar Canned tomato sauce and tomato paste Worchester and soy sauce lemon and lime juice
We always try to keep:
Eggs, bread, milk, cereal, Jarred sauce, fruits, vegies, cheeses, cold cuts, chicken cutlets, chopped meat, steak
Have fun

Re: HELP!! GOing food shopping tonight for the first time...
Get "helper" kits- tacos, fajitas, shake & bake, Boboli pizza crusts, etc... That way you don't have as much thinking to do at first. You just add the meat/sauce and veggies kind of thing. As you get used to that you'll become more experimental and learn what you can/can't make weel and what types of foods you want to eat regularly.
