Did it ever occur to those of you who hate complainers that they complain because they WANT to stay?
I feel very very sorry for people who want to stay and simply can not afford to. However, I think that a lot of the complaining that i see is not that a person can't afford anything, its that they dont want to live in what they can afford. People that make average incomes aren't going to be able to afford the types of homes that people can get on an average salary in some other parts of the country - but thats because we live in an above average location..... I don't know if i am getting my point across correctly, but its the same way people that make average salaries in NYC are forced to live in a studio apartment. But they do it because of the location, not because it is a big beautiful apartment overlooking central park like they might be able to afford in say, Oklahoma.....
Again, I couldn't agree more with you.
I am a first time home owner and very proud. Sure I think housing has gone through the roof and a year ago I was feeling the frustration of having looked at 160 houses in a 2 year period...but in the end, it was all more than worth it.

How many of you guys that are saying that some people are "complaining" are first time buyers? I think it would be alot easier for me to stop complaining if I made a ton of $$ on a condo before buying my first house.
and FH and I make over the average income for LI and can't afford the average home price. If I could afford the average home price, I wouldnt complain!
Just curious....
When I bought my first condo, I was making WELL above the avg household income on LI, and I was still only able to afford a very small condo. I wasnt expecting that just because i made above the average salary that i would be able to afford an above average house or even an average one. It takes time to save up for a down payment of that size to afford the average house... I never expected to be able to afford an average house until i was in my 30's so maybe my expecations were just different......
I dont begrudge you your complaints that housing costs are excessive here, but its the people who non stop complain about living here - that get to me.

Yeah... we are in the same boat.. I have been so upset over this lately. We thought maybe we would be able to buy a home, but then learned the reality of it. We weren't looking at anything extravagant- to be honest we were looking at 300K 2 bedroom sh-t holes. This wouldn't be our "dream home" or ideal situation, but we thought we would start at the bottom and try and work our way up. To find that we can't even do that is extremely frustrating and discouraging. I want to live on LI- I grew up here, my family and friends are here, and I think its an awesome place to live and raise a family. But yes, I am complaining. I am complaining that things are so out of hand here, I can't afford to have a family in the same place I grew up. I am complaining that if things don't change I have to make the decision of either A) having kids OR having a house because I can't afford both OR B) Move away from my family and friends to have my own family and house...
What kind of decision is that to have to make?

I totally agree. I know I've complained quite a bit about Long Island. I think its more the frustration that we can't afford to buy.

I'm one of those tired of listening to the complainers...plain and simple...it is what it is...if no one likes it MOVE! If being a homeowner is that important and you cannot do it on LI...than yes...go somewhere else. (But not you...you and DH have to stay nearby)

I personal am NOT a homeowner...I can't afford it now and honestly am not sure if we will ever be. We realize that and would prefer to stay on the Island with our families...so you know what...if living in an apt is our only option...so be it.
No one get me wrong...I think the prices are sickening for what you get around here. I can easily have a gorgeous ranch house upstate 3x the size of anything on LI plus 3.5 acres for NOTHING...but I do not want to live there...No, We want to live here.
If the time comes and being a homeowner is completely out of reach and we feel it's important to move...we will...until then...this is our option.

Work
If we move we have to start from scratch. We both have very LI specific jobs. If I didnt work so darn hard to make my career what it is, I would be outta here in a heartbeat
ETS: I am a new first time homeowner. Money & prices arent what I dont like about LI. Its the "quality" of life here.

Re: Why do you choose to live on Long Island?
I also think that people have problems saving money. And - please no one think I am talking about them because I don't know any of you personally - but I know people that have wasted thousands and thousands of dollars and have nothing to show for it.
It is not easy to own a home on Long Island. We personally don't go out to dinner as much as we used to -- we don't shop as much as we did - there are alot of things that we had to stop doing in order to save more money.
Alot of people aren't willing to make those types of sacrifices just yet.

I feel like my rant made this thread take a turn for the worst - and I apologize for that. Let's all get back to discussing what we love about LI!!!! Even the people who can't afford it and those who desperately want to get out of here - there must be some things you will miss!!!!

Re: Why do you choose to live on Long Island?
Agreed...it does cost a ton of money.
The part that bugs me is that people try and compare real estate here to other places that are much lower. You can't compare them in most cases. Apples and oranges. SO the complaining part about not being able to afford a home here bugs me because of the comparing to other cities. We all know you can buy a house somewhere else for less..that's when I say-then go.
You just can't compare two totally different markets.
But I digress..I live here..yes, it's expensive, it ain't getting any cheaper and I like it here for all the same reasons everyone else does.
I wish it was cheaper to buy a house..I wish all my friends and family who are looking could find something they really like to buy.

Re: Why do you choose to live on Long Island?
I love LI but I just have to put my two cents in. I went to college at ASU in Tempe, AZ. I loved it there. It has great shopping, great locations(5 hrs from Mexico, CA., Vegas, etc.) I considered staying there but all my family was here as well as my closest friends. If I didn't come back I never would have met DH. Last year my Mom and my sister both moved south. So now i have a few close friends up here, my Dad, SIL and my in-laws live upstate. DH and I definitely consider moving to get the kind of house we would like for what we can afford. We own a house now but it is not our "dream house" I am in sales so really I could make the same amt of $$ anywhere I want to as long as it has some business and DH is a mortgage broker so he could do that anywhere. I don't know my point really but I am just saying I am a NY girl but I really think I could be happy living anywhere and I actually find it exciting to think about new adventures and places

Exactly! My whole point for this thread was to talk about positives!!! We already have at least a thousand threads ( ) dedicated to the ridiculous house prices and how difficult it is to afford a home here! Let's start some positive thinking!!!!

Re: Why do you choose to live on Long Island?
Another good reason - cheap nail salons. I feel like in other parts of the country a $20 manicure is normal. I love paying $8 for a mani and $30 for a mani/pedi! For everything thats overpriced here - at least we can have nice nails!

My teacher salary and job are great! But besides that I would move...I am now in love with California. DH loves being near the city and beach, primarily he is the reason why we stay. He loves it here.

I would never leave. It is a great place to live. My family is here and DH's business is here. He will own it very soon (big reason for living here).
And my son will get to see his family all the time. I am so happy about that.
Plus another great reason to stay is All American in Massapequa. What would I do without that place

Bagels, Bagels, Bagels
And this comes from a girl who went to Catholic school for 12 years
ETA: My SIL lives in Wisconsin. Every time my IL's visit (at least twice sometimes 3x a year) they bring a huge duffle bag of about 6-7 dozen bagels with them. Then they have to land in Chicago and rent a car so they can pick up a trunk full of Trader Joe's stuff for her and then continue the 1 1/2 drive to her house.
She saves $$$$ not living on LI but when you add up my FIL's tab on bagels, rental cars and Trader Joe's... he's spending what she is saving
