all I have to say is this...
if I was afraid to venture to a certain area, I would probably be too embarrassed to admit it, much less POST it!
all she could have said was "I have a friend who lives in a questionable area and I don't feel safe... etc etc".
I would never name the area myself. it's asking for trouble 
just want to add that I haven't been to Harlem in many many years, so I really can't say anything about it - good or bad.

OK...well i am going to be the first to admit....
I would have been nervous stepping into Harlem ...
YES it is because of what i have heard and seen.
Yes because up until a few years ago that was all of my knowledge of the area.
But i tooo went to Columia and got to know that area well.
When i first got accepted i was nervous.... but being there, getting to know the area (not all of it but the areas by the University)...well i got very comprftable there....
I chalk it up to ignorance....
the sad part of that thread is that when people are trying to EDUCATE her....to reassure her....
she balks at it...THAT is PURE NEVER CHANGING IGNORANCE
i feel bad for her friend

I am not sure that I feel that stating not wanting to be in a harsh area is a bad thing but I think when she stated HARLEM repeatedly as if it wasnt the specific place she was at the moment she was being called obscene names etc... who wouldnt be scared if someone was screaming obscenities at them even if it was around the block. I think it sounds like its more her past experience then the actual place. But I think she already knows that she doesnt want to be there so she shouldnt go.

I personally think she wrote what she wrote on purpose. While I do feel she is very ignorant, her writing is not.
I think it was deliberate, and done to spark up some major drama.

She may be ignorant, but why attack the girl?? She doesn't know any better. I realize her post was kind of pointless. I live in Brooklyn now, but when I was younger I thought bad things about the 5 boroughs in general. We all know there are good and bad parts of every area. If she doesn't feel comfortable, so be it.

I actually thought many were informative but the second girl tokk a beating on her and then many followed in her footsteps. I would say the second was more obnoxious then the general statement. IMO it was her that stir the pot.
