Re: Terrible first day
I'm so sorry it didn't go well. Once they realize that you're not going anywhere and that you're the adult they calm down.
I do want you do know that I did spend about the first 2 months of school crying... And it's even more tough going into your situation.
I sincerely hope it gets better

Daniela, I'm so sorry that you had such a horrible first day. I think a lot of ladies on here have given you wonderful advice. I especially think that it's a good idea to seek out some mentor teachers who have been in the school for awhile to talk to them about their experiences and what has worked for them.

Re: Terrible first day
Thank you all for your support. I have been on the phone all night with every teacher I know. I am going to give it the week and if things do not improve, just move on and find something else. No matter what, I cannot feel like this all the time, and like my mother wisely said, not every situation is compatible to you.

Re: Terrible first day
Daniela I am so sorry I am not a teacher so I have no real advice but I would stick it out for a while and see which way it goes all the while still interviewing elsewhere.

Re: Terrible first day
They are testing you!!! They want you to leave!!! Remember, city schools are HARD!!!!! The disciplinary actions that you can take are really restricted, so you have to be clever. I agree with Stef, but I would add an incentive. Food. Kids love food. And watch that Michelle Pfeiffer movie, ah, what the hecks the name??? Dangerous Minds. I know it's a movie, but she kicks some a$$ in it.
Anyway, teach to those who want to learn. The others will follow. And start a rewards system, reward the good behavior!!

Re: Terrible first day
Daniela, I am so very sorry your first day was so terrible. I am shocked that things are truly that bad in schools. I would have NEVER spoken to a teacher the way these students spoke to you today, my father would have back slapped me so hard I wouldn't have spoken for a month.
I wish I had some words of wisdom to help make you feel better or stronger about facing them again. It truly bothers me that teachers can be scared out of the classroom.

Re: Terrible first day
Oh I'm sorry this day went so awful for you! What little brats!! I know this is not going to be easy, but once you tame those little monsters, you are going to be a much better and stronger teacher for it. Maybe this is just a life experience that you have to go through.
I hope it gets better very very soon!

Re: Terrible first day
I am sooo sorry about that- Teens that have been without discipline for that long are going to go crazy on the first sane person they see. I went through this A LOT this year as the new Dean at a high school where the old one basically had a nervous breakdown. I never thought it would better but really it has. I hope you don't give up and go back in there and give them the strict, caring teacher they need.
You can do this sweetie, I know you can

Re: Terrible first day
I'm sorry you had such a hard first day . First days are always hard, actually I always through first weeks were tough. It makes it more so because of these kids you're dealing with...what a shame for them not to understand that you could actually care about them and want them to learn so they have a better life.
For tomorrow I hope you make the difference in just one kid in that classroom. Forget the rest...just one kid...

Re: Terrible first day
What I saw today was truly unbelieveable. It is truly frightening to see what goes on though. How on earth is this allowed to happen? How did it happen to begin with? Can anything be done to rectify it? This is not teaching and not what I signed up for!

Wow, that's horrible , I hope tomorrow's better. It's the kids who want the help the least who need it the most. Please keep us posted.
Good luck tomorrow, Kelly

Are you in a SURR school? FIL was and said it was horrible. MIL was in administration called in a bunch of favors and got him transferred. This was a few years ago.

Re: Terrible first day
Hang in there!
Do whatever is right for you. Your life is so short, each minute, each day should be filled with happiness. If this in the end cannot bring you happiness, move on. At least give it a second try and then you can say you did and feel good no matter what your decision is.
