Tipping question courtesy of LIF

so this is from an LIF article:

11. Barista: Let’s not forget the hardworking folks behind the coffee counters across the country. After all, where would you be without your Grande, non-fat, no-whip, double-shot, hazelnut-vanilla latte? So, before you walk off without so much as a thank you, consider throwing your spare change in their tip cup or adding a few bucks to your pre-paid coffee card.

12. Takeout Cashier: These are the folks responsible for your lunch or dinner order, so treat them nicely. The average tip is about 10 percent, or a little extra for a large or rush order, and/or if the individual helps you to your car. And, if you’re a regular, repeat customer, tip a little more to ensure continued quality service.

Do you tip these people? Am I really supposed to tip the person who outs my food in a bag? I thought I was a decent tipper. Maybe I'm not???

I don't tip take out cashiers. I never knew it was expected.

I tip the coffee people where I am a regular. They have my coffee waiting by the time I get to the front of the line.

Re: Tipping question courtesy of LIF

Baristas I do tip. especially if I go to the coffee shop during rush hour or lunch time when it is at its busiest.

I have never tipped a take-out cashier.

The thing with tipping is this - if someone is getting paid a decent salary, then I do not tip. To me the Baristas are not getting paid enough to keep up with the demand of customers.

me too. I will tip at Starbucks sometimes (just my change) cause the girl there always remembers my drink and is so nice.

I have never even thought to tip a take-out cashier.

Re: Tipping question courtesy of LIF

I usually tip baristas if I have 2 or more drinks.
I'll tip take out orders if its some place like applebee's or something. But not fast food or chinese take out.

I don't drink coffee, but if I did...I can't be sure I'd tip the kids at Starbucks.

As for the takeout person, they don't mean McDonald's of course, they mean like at Chili's where someone's job is to do just take out orders...you should tip them. Let me rephrase, it's greatly appreciated if you tip them. Some of them make a higher base pay, some of them make waitress wages and rely on the tips. I'm not sure I tip them 10% though. Depends on how much work I see them put into it.

Yes, I tip the Barista's at Starbucks...and I tip when I get takeout. I don't think it should be mandatory but I think it's nice to recognize their services...so that's why I do it.

I have tipped take-out cashiers in the past but lately I don't anymore. I just don't see why I should.

I sometimes (but rarely) tip the baristas because the coffee is usually expensive enough.

I think there is way too much tipping expected these days.

Re: Tipping question courtesy of LIF

I do tip both, baristas do make a decent hourly wage, so I usually only throw a dollar into thier tip cup....takeout cashiers I always tip, because they are the ones making sure the right food is going into the bag, they are the ones that add the condiments, and knives and forks, and they only make shift pay, which is like 3.25 an hour. I used to work in a restaurant, and I know what a PITA it was to do takeout orders-so i always tip to show my appreciation.

Re: Tipping question courtesy of LIF

i DO NOT tip them.

my sister worked at starbucks during college and made well above minimum wage.

on the other hand, regular watiers/bartenders do not. when i was a watiress we made like $2 an hour salary.

eta; im not sure about the second one - if i order takeout and its delivered i tip. if i walk in and order chinese food i dont. those people usually own the place. why do they need a tip?

Re: Tipping question courtesy of LIF

Don't even get me started on tipping.

Makes me insane. Especially the inevitable debate we will have on here at Christmas about the garbage men and mailmen.

Ugh.

Me neither, but I make more than minimum wage.....
I HAVE, on the other hand, worked in a tipping industry and it can be very frustrating to not know how much money you will make day to day.

I don't tip the take out cashier, but I will tip a barista if I notice someone being snotty while I'm there.
