OOT salaries - puts things in perspective
I was talking to my good friend in Rochester last night and she was telling me how she got a new job because she had a terrible boss. So I said well will you at least be making more money in this new job? Oh yes, she said she is going from $10.80/hr to $11.25/hr! I know its all relative since her rent is like $650 and she lives in an apt bigger than mine but still.....it really puts things in perspective for me. I guess I shouldnt complain since I make more than double of what she does and I think I make crap money! To think that I spend $15-$20 in the drug store when I am bored - thats 2 hours of work for her By the way she is leaving her job as a TELEVISION PRODUCER FOR FOX. Unbelieveable. I guess I shouldnt be sad that I never followed my broadcasting dreams. But it goes to show you that it can be done. She was in my wedding last year, traveled down, stayed in a hotel, bought a dress, got her hair done, etc.
Just something I wanted to share.......

Re: OOT salaries - puts things in perspective
I had a lot of college friends who were broadcasting majors, and we used to talk about the salaries. I had a ex who was offered an on-air job at a station in Iowa, for the whopping amount of $8k a year. Granted, that was 1992, and I am sure Iowa's not expensive, but still. I don't know how people work in that field and live in NYC.

ETA: IMO, companies in NY (NYC & LI) pay very poorly considering what it costs to live here.

I am so done with this city and we are planning to move back to Rochester... but it is really hard finding jobs that will at least pay the same as we earn right now... but you have to start from somewhere...

Re: OOT salaries - puts things in perspective
Honestly though-- it really depends on the cost of living. There was a web site out there-- it may be affiiliated with Sperlings, that has a cost of living calculator. I was toying around with moving to Atlanta like a year ago-- so I was looking into it. At the time, I was living in Manhattan-- and the cost of living in Atlanta was 60% cheaper than NYC-- now that does not only include rent/mortgage, but also also groceries, dinners out, coffee on the way to work, etc.
So with the cost of living being 60% cheaper-- and the salary rates AT MOST being like 20% cheaper-- people that live in other places do have much more disposable income than we do.
Makes me sick really.

Is your DH from there? If not, how does he feel about moving there? I know I could buy a house tomorrow in cash and that wont even be enough for a downpayment on LI!

my DH lived only in nyc since he came from Poland but he loves it when we visit my parents in Rochester... we are both ready for a quieter and simpler life I think especially when you start think of having kids and stuff...

Its a wonderful simple and quiet lifestyle up there - I am happy for you! With the cost of living so different, it can be done.

Re: OOT salaries - puts things in perspective
DH and I always talk about moving up that way- we both love Canandaigua, and what you can buy for $200k blows my mind. I'd probably take a pay cut but DH teaches at a college that does not pay well at all (especially for the NY metro area) so even if he had the same salary we'd be better off.

Re: OOT salaries - puts things in perspective
That isn't necessarily the case at all.
I moved to Charlotte, NC, in February '05. I transferred with my company and didn't take a paycut, so I was making my NY salary in Clt. In September '05 I got a 10% raise, and I will get an 11% raise in September. Would I be making more money in NY - yes - but certainly not that much more, and the cost of living here is soo much cheaper than NY.
It's all depends on the location, job market, cost of living, and perhaps most importantly, what you do for a living.

Re: OOT salaries - puts things in perspective
I moved to Charlotte in March and got a raise. My husband "transferred" w/ his company (not doing the same job, but working for the same company) and not only did he keep his NYC, they added a little to it!

Re: OOT salaries - puts things in perspective
I know someone who moved to St. Louis and his salary went up $8/k year, they paid him a large moving bonus --- he spends like 2X/week golfing with clients and his house is HUGE and was only like $230K.

Re: OOT salaries - puts things in perspective
Question? Did the Charlotte people work in the financial industry? I work for a brokerage firm and a few of our clients are in Charlotte. It would be great if we moved down there to a job that was related to what I do now.
I can't wait to visit there in 2 weeks!

It's so funny - I live in Rochester now! We moved up here due to DH's job. I transferred within my company to their office here and I took a 20% pay cut. I also thought that there was no way that the pace would be the same as LI/NYC but boy was I wrong. The people here work MORE HOURS for LESS money! I think it's because the job market is so bad here. A lot of companies are downsizing, etc. I no longer work there, and am waiting to start my new job which will hopefully have better hours. DH got a small raise, but to him the quality of life makes it worth it: no traffic, no 4 hour daily commute to work, lots of property / house for your $$$, etc.
There are a lot of perks to living here (we built a house, people are very friendly, schools are great, etc). It's a tough decision for anyone to make to move away from NYC/LI. I do miss it and if I could afford to move back to be closer to my family I would. If my family / friends were here, I wouldn't have any problem living here.

Re: OOT salaries - puts things in perspective
we are also one of those people that moved OOS and got major pay raises. It depends on the industry and company that you will work for.

Re: OOT salaries - puts things in perspective
First of all Heather... dont get any ideas about moving away from me!!
And yes, it is all relative but alot of the things are the same prices all over the country like retial prices on cars, designer clothes, etc.
