Am I the only one just finding out how weird and freaky "Ring Around The Rosie" is??
It's about the Black Plague? Ring around the rosie is the plague surrounding England (the Rose); pocket full of posie is flowers they stuffed in pockets of the dead so they wouldn't smell; ashes ashes we all fall down. How f'd up?! Ruined my fond memories!
All those fairy tales are odd; wolves eating little girls...Jack and his magic beans. How trippy! And what is with "London Bridge is falling down?" That's just sick, too! Humph!

Some people also say Ring Around The Rosie is the rash people got before they died. DH and I were discussing this last night!

I took a children's literature class at Nassau years ago and we had to read stories and pick them apart. Most of the stories and pictures had sexual references to them. It made me look at children's stories in a different light.

Nursery Rhymes, Disney Movies...they all have kind of morbid undertones.
Almost all Disney movies feature the death or absence of a parent:

Dumbo
Beauty and the Beast
Snow White
Lion King
Little Mermaid
Finding Nemo

In college I took a class called.."myths legends and fairytales" In the class we read the orginal versions of the fairytales we all grew up with. The original versions were not for children...lets put it this was...the Grim's Brothers...were very GRIM!!!!

most fairy tales and nursery rhymes were passed dwn for YEARS before anyone wrote them down.
For the most part they were used to "teach" (AKA SCARE) children life lessons

absence of a parent is actually something that almost all fairytales have...its something that almost all herions or heros must overcome.
In the class I took we discussed what makes a fairytale differ from a Myth or Legend and the absence of a parent is actually one of the differences mentioned.

in the original version of Cinderella..."AshPuttle" the evil Step sisters actually cut of part of their foot to attempt to fit into the tiny glass slipper.

I'm a history teacher and when I teach about the plague I ask my students how many of them played "Ring Around the Rosie"... I did all of the time as a kid. They are shocked when I tell them the origins. They often say "EWWWWWW, I can't believe my parent's taught me that... how gross and sick!" I'll then say that their parents probably didn't even know.
ETA: Many of the author's of the nursery rhymes we know experimented with recreational drugs like Opium. Opium was very big in the 19th century and used by many "intellectuals" to take them to a "higher consciousness". Freud was also known ato dabble in it.

I took a children's Literature class in undergrad and in grad school and they said the same thing. Children's literature was really not appropriate for children but was used to teach them that there are dangers in life.
