Will you/do you allow a computer in your childs room?

I was watching Oprah and it just made me realize even more that it's not safe for kids to have a computer in their room.... If my kids want to go online, they do it supervisedChat Icon

Re: Will you/do you allow a computer in your childs room?

it depends how the the child will act and what is on the computer to prevent those mesaures... then again, i dont have kids so i guess i'll wait and see what happens.

i would supervise and limit use depending on the setting on the computer other wise, the computer won't let him visit x,y, z sites

Re: Will you/do you allow a computer in your childs room?

No they won't be allowed. It will be in the family room or kitchen where they can be supervised and there will be as many blocks as I can put on there.

My 11-year old niece goes through AOL KIDS and her parents have to approve emailers and emails. It also limits her access to kid-friendly sites. In addition, they have spoken openly about the "world wide web" and the possibilites of people contacting her. She keeps a very open line of communication regarding who she speaks to.

I know it gets harder as kids get older, but I think for her age, her parents are taking the right steps to teaching her how to use this new technology.

Re: Will you/do you allow a computer in your childs room?

I would have a block on everything! And the sad part is our children will be WAY beyond us on how they know the computer. Patrick is 4 & knows his way around the computer. (which I supervise) If he's not on PBS kids or Disney I tell him to turn it off.

No...my step-daughter is 9, and she is only allowed to use the computer when one of us is in the room (it's in the basement).

Re: Will you/do you allow a computer in your childs room?

No. I would put it in a room where I can supervise better. As a former teacher, I am not an advocate of kids having computers, TVs or phones in their rooms.

I'm watching this now too and absolutely horrifed. I teach teenagers and now that I have a daughter, I'm scared! I will not allow my children to have computers in their room. Whatever they need to use it for can be done out in the open on the "family" computer. This was my attitude before watching this show too.

I know. Sometimes I wish the government would round these people up and send all of these pedophiles to a remote island or something. They do not deserve to be a part of society IMO.

Re: Will you/do you allow a computer in your childs room?

I'll have to watch the 7:00 repeat of Oprah tonight.

My kids will not be allowed to have a computer in their room. DH and I intend on monitoring their internet use.

I was just going to post about Dateline and Perverted Justice. If any parent watches that program when they aired it, no parent will allow their child to be on the computer unsupervised. It's pretty scary.........

I agree. Chop chop then send them away like on the episode of the Simpsons when they sent all of the annoying celebrities in a rocket to the sun.
