Old House or New?
I am in the process of buying am older home. I love the house and all the character that it has because it is so old (1938), and fortunately for us it has been updated with a lot of modern ammenities, but I am curious - What do most people prefer? Old house with a lot of character, New house with all the modern ammenities, or something in the middle?

Re: Old House or New?
nothing compares to older homes with character...especially ones that have the modern amenities....there is an older house that i am absolutely IN LOVE with!! (has been renovated and updated) but obviously cannot afford the $1.4K price tag!!
check this out....
i think that if you can have the best of both worlds, (old & new)...i say go for it!! new/newer construction isn't always what it's cracked up to be...they don't make homes like they used to!! jmo

Re: Old House or New?
I would love to get an older house with updates. If the house get regular maintenance, it should be just as good as a new house IMO

Re: Old House or New?
I personally love older homes. New homes usually JMO lack the character of a older home and taxes are always insane on newer homes also
But we are broke so we ended up with a crappy ranch built in the 50s talk about boring

Re: Old House or New?
I love older homes, but I dont like dealing with older home problems...Sagging floors, leaky pipes, termites etc.....
I think older homes were built better though. It is scary how new construction homes are built so fast now a days Scott

Re: Old House or New?
We just bough an old house (1929) it has its pros and cons. The kitchen and bath have been updates, but the doorways are small upstairs and the staircase is very narrow (cape). I have an eclectic style, and you cant really create the old charm, but you can always modernize a home. So i choose an old home with charm :)

Re: Old House or New?
We have an old house with lots of character (and quirkiness). It is circa 1915. I LOVE the older features in our home. The window moulding is 6" thick and we have the original mantle in the LR and a coffered ceiling in the DR.
We have renovated and replaced and intend to renovate further but everything is in the style of the early 1900's. We also have all the modern amenities I wanted - new heating system, central air, wireless internet and even a natural gas hook-up outside for the barbeque.

Re: Old House or New?
MrsErod - that house is sooo nice. Maybe i will save those pictures for my own house when we are able to re-do some rooms!!! I loooove the kitchen.
As far as the house we are buying - i love that it is old and it definitely has a lot of character but I also have the same problem with small doorways and even though it is a colonial there is really no foyer.... In houses built today they have these grand two story foyers with big open staircases. there is something about that look too that is so nice to me!
Oh and I love the clawfoot tub too! So pretty!!!

Re: Old House or New?
LOL - I had to double check that I didn't write amenitities too - because i am the worst speller and so careless so it wouldn't have surprised me if i had put that in your head!

Our house is a colonial with no foyer - I think they call them railroad colonials! I thought it would bother me but now I love that it's cozy.
A clawfooted tub is on my wish-list too

Re: Old House or New?
Our house was built in 1920! We love it because it has this gorgeous molding around all the door frames that is original with the house. It also has the orginal front door. THe previous owners did ALOT of updates (new cabinets, granite countertop, ceramic tile floors, jacuzzi tub in bathroom..).

Re: Old House or New?
I definitely prefer older homes and renovating them to include all the benefits of modernity but keeping the charm and amazing construction quality of the past. We actually wouldn't even consider anything that wasn't built pre 1948, including our co-op. New is just not us. My dream is to purchase an old farmhouse and fix it up to bring it back to its former glory.

I prefer old homes like brownstowns, victorians, colonials. Not the "new" victorians and colonials, the real old ones.

Re: Old House or New?
We are in the process of selling our old 1928 home. It has alot of charm and character. We bought it for a steal a few years ago and were able to update and modernize it- soup to nuts! Now it is just so comfortable and cozy... I am really going to miss it.
For our new house we bought a custom split built in 1955... and though it is much bigger and gorgeous... it just isn't the same as our older house.

Re: Old House or New?
Our house was built in 1904- needs lots of work but I love the character of the leaded glass windows and the original moldings.
However, it would be nice too to have a new house that doesn't need work- you can always decorate in a way to add the old "character."
But if we weren't always renovating, how would I spend my weekends?

Re: Old House or New?
That house is beautiful, I love the kitchen and bath.
There are some old houses that I love because it has alot of charm and a great layout and some new ones that I love..I think it depends alot on how much work we'd have to put in and how much $$ we'd have to spend updating because I would definitely want new appliances, floors, tiles, etc either way.
