Who commutes an hour and a half or more to work each day??
Today was my first day commuting from my new house in NJ into the city. It took me an hour and a half and I want to shoot myself. How do you all do it? I take an hour bus and then a subway and then I have to walk a few blocks. It's so draining.
Any tips?? Who else here commutes far?

i used to commute into that city and it took that long (more like 2 hours door to door). i hated it and lasted a little over a year. i was miserable. surrounded by hot sweaty people...i could never really relax or fall asleep. it wasn't me time because it was so annoying.
I had books, magazines, blackberry, ipod, but nothing made it doable for me.

A good book makes it go by faster. Or invest in a Nintendo DS.
I notice it so much less if I'm engrossed in something else.

I used to commute for 90 minutes when I live on LI.
I always had a bag of stuff with me - music, books, writing. I did a LOT of sleeping on mass transit.

Can you take the train from Summit or Short Hills?
I might try that tomorrow, but it will still take the same amount of time (45 min I think) to go into Penn Station and then I have to go to 59th and Lex....so it doesn't really cut enough off of the commute to matter (I don't think).

My DH does an hour and 20 minutes. It stinks! He reads the paper, ESPN magazine, and sleeps! Not much else to do!

When I worked in the city I commuted from Dunellen, NJ (Raritan Valley line) to 34th St every day. It took me 1.5 hrs in the AM and the same at night. Longer if there were delays or bad weather. What got me through it was getting into a routine, reading good books (I was addicted) and also my i-pod. I would nap sometimes in the AM and also read for a little while in the evening, then shut my eyes til I heard my stop coming up. It got draining after a year and a half, I am not going to lie

I commuted from Miller Place to the city on three separate occasions for about 6 months at a time - it was about 2 1/2 hours door to door each way every day. I used to sleep a lot. You kind of get into a groove after a while...
My great uncle did it for 20+ years and said he was never so well rested as when he was commuting because he had a nap coming and a nap going.

I commuted for 6 months between Farmingdale and Newark and when I finally moved to NJ, I was so used to my morning and afternoon naps, it was hard to get used to NOT having them. Took me a while to acclimate back.

Take the train from Millburn. It takes me 10 minutes from my house in Springfield, and the train is about 35 minutes. I work on 8th Ave though, so getting from Penn is easy. I can see where getting to 59th & Lex is annoying. Do you take the N/R?

My DH does this everyday it is just shy of 4 hours a day he spends traveling and only gets to see DS in the morning durning the week. This is the reason we are moving. He did it for 2.5 years and it is getting to him. He takes the LIRR and then the subway. He said if he didnt have to take the E train it would be so much beter.

My commute is 2 - 2.5 hours each way. I bring a book, magazine, catalogs, Ipod, blackberry and sometimes my laptop.
I usually take a 20 minute nap on the way home.
It's such a big chunk of the day so I try to make the best of it - even though it su*ks!!

Okie here is how I do it:
1) Think about how much your family appreciates it and how much they appreciate you for doing it
2) Invest in Sirius/XM which ever you prefer. It will pay for itself the first day!
3) Don't forget your Bluetooth so you can call everyone and their mama when you are bored on the way home
4) If you hate your job read #1 again
5) If all else fails...read #1 again

Good idea, they have the mid-town direct line through Millburn. We live in S.Orange, and on days when we don't feel like driving to the city (we don't work there, but go in on a regular basis), we take the train from S.Orange and it takes 30 minutes on the Mid Town Direct.

I used to commute from PA...took me about 2 hours...DH still does it. It's very draining...but, we wanted to live here so he just has to deal...

Door to door it take me 1 1/2 hrs..I'm only in the city 3 days a week though, its annoying but I'm used to it. I've been doing it for over 5 yrs.

I did a 1 hour commute for 3 years and a 2 hours commute for 3 months and I wanted to shoot myself. It's so frustrating to spend 3-4 hours a day in the car. I found a better job near my house and now I live in my territory, so I really have no commute.

Up until 4 wks ago my commute was about 2 hrs each way in to NYC. At first it drove me nuts and I was bored to tears. Then I got used to the train and started sleeping. I would say try to do that on the bus. Bring a newspaper and read and hopefully you'll get tired and after a few days of commuting (or weeks) you'll be able to sleep. Sleeping was a great way to pass the time AND help me get caught up on lack thereof!
