Re: Panic/Anxiety Attacks-Can someone tell me about them?
I get panic/anxiety attacks fairly regularly. I have learned some techniques on how to "control" them (in lieu of being on medication) but for everyone, the syptoms can vary slightly. Here is some guidelines I"ve found that might help you. If you have any other questions, feel free to FM me sweets :
A panic attack is a discrete period of intense fear or discomfort, in which four (or more) of the following symptoms developed abruptly and reached a peak within 10 minutes:
Palpitations, pounding heart, or accelerated heart rate Sweating Trembling or shaking Sensations of shortness of breath or smothering Feeling of choking Chest pain or discomfort Nausea or abdominal distress Feeling dizzy, unsteady, lightheaded, or faint Derealization (feelings of unreality) or depersonalization (being detached from oneself) Fear of losing control or going crazy Fear of dying Paresthesias (numbness or tingling sensations) Chills or hot flushes

Re: Panic/Anxiety Attacks-Can someone tell me about them?
I have a question, if you don't mind. Is it possible for one specific place to trigger a panic attack? It seems like I only experience this when I am in the mall?

Deb - it could be the heat, the crowd, associating a bad childhood experience with a place, etc....basically, YES, a place can trigger an attack.
I have them often...they're no fun.

Yes, I believe so
For me, when my panic attacks were at their worst.. I always got them on the train ride TO work .. never anywhere else really
Or I would get them after I'd fallen asleep , I would wake up from a deep sleep with one
Now I cannot really see a pattern with them, they happen at random

WOW! I had no idea the smallest thing could trigger it. I am so sorry for anyone who goes thru this ona regular basis. The mall always freaks me out and Icould not imagine having to go through that all the time, or having to deal with it unexpectedly.

you should always make sure that nothing is wrong medically first! Just in case!

I definitely agree.
While the criteria/guidelines I posted above can indicate a panic or anxiety attack, those syptoms can also be caused by physical/medical conditions as well. That is why its often hard to initially diagnose panic/anxiety attacks when they begin.
I would say that if the palpaitations were to continue, to go see your doctor just in case. I know that I was convinced initially I had something medically wrong w/me and had everything ruled out before being diagnosed with panic disorder.

Re: Panic/Anxiety Attacks-Can someone tell me about them?
Ive done counseling with people who experience panic/anxiety attacks. Malls are very hard for people because they are crowded, loud, and overwhelming. Dont feel bad. When you go get a drink or something to eat. It will offset some of your symptoms. Gum is also good when walking around. Relax and dont forget to breathe in places that overwhelm you.

that kind of thing works mostly with anxiety... Panic attacks are imo too severe to just eat something and calm down. Usually you have to leave if you can.

Yup, I have to leave! I have tried sitting, breathing, eating, drinking ect. It;s soo odd, I have no idea why malls set me off like that. Crowds in other places dont bother me...I jsut dont know WHY it happens there.

Re: Panic/Anxiety Attacks-Can someone tell me about them?
one more thing...panic/anxiety attacks can also be confused with Post traumatic stress related ideas. Just as an example, my dad just passed and I was there and saw the whole thing from beginning to end ambulance, lights, noises, heart machines, CPR etc... I sometimes have woke up in a panic from a dream that had nothing to do with this related event but It will have something to do with being out of control, or threatened etc... and it will bring me right back to feeling the way I did at the scene. Just evaluate the things that have gone on for yourself so you can distinguish whether it is life evenst that have caused trauma or an onset of panic attacks that occur now or have begun from childhood. Family history is another area you might want to look at. I think working in the field of therapy, I have seen many diagnoses get jumbled. Its important for the DRs to know where mental health related factors are coming from. I personally have not experienced anything until the death of my father. For me its Post trauma.
