I know you can argue that a call that personal shouldn't have been made in the office.
Bingo.
Not much you can do about it since its a supervisor unfortunately.
even if that person went out of their way to eavesdrop?
So just because Boosh made the call does not give the supervisor the right to gossip about it. It's just being decent to keep things you overhear whether intentional or not to yourself.

The issue isn't whether or not it was a personal call, the issue is this supervisor spreading around personal information that coworkers shouldn't be privy to. She needs to confront her supervisor.

I was waiting for the DJ to join in
I disagree - I think a supervisor especially shouldn't be behaving in this manner. I don't think making one personal call warrants being the subject of gossip generated by a supervisor, sorry.

Re: Work Question
and rich, i happen to agree with you, the only way to avoid it happening is not to make the call from the office
but it happened, can't take it back
now the issue is, what to do

Agreed!! (but you already know what I think Don & Boosh )
I dont buy into the "it was a personal call SO THAT GIVES MY SUPERVISOR the right to go and spread my VERY PERSONAL information around the office.. a small office in fact, where eveyrone is already in each other's business..
I am appalled by this situation!!!

Re: Work Question
I also think there may be some legal issues. Companies are held responsible to keep personal employee information confidential. If a supervisor is spreading around personal, confidential information, the company may be held responsible for damages. Also, depending on what the information is, there are harassment and discrimination issues that need to be considered.

Re: Work Question
If a call was that sensative in nature, I would have stepped out and used my cell phone. But, what's done is done.
I don't think the supervisor should be eavesdropping on a conversation one of their employees are having. This includes business related calls in my opinion. It can make them worried or paranoid on the phone and may effect their job performance. I supervise 10 people and honestly don't care who they are talking on the phone with. As for speaking to the supervisor, it sounds like that may make the situation worse. I would speak to their supervisor or just drop it and be more careful in the future.

Good point. I'm not sure if eavesdropping counts as a company having confidential information on an employee, however with the past problems, there could be a case for harassment and discrimination.
Going forward, I would have her document all exchanges between her and her boss. Should something come up down the road, she has something to reference with counsel (or the bosses boss) if need be.

Re: Work Question
It was very unprofessional of the supervisor to do that. People make personal calls from the office all the time - sometimes calls need to be made between 9 and 5! Boosh needs to talk to her privately about the situation. Easy for me to say - I know I would have a hard time doing it.

Re: Work Question -- UPDATE
I think everyone at one point or another uses their work telephone to make personal calls. I think this supervisor acted very unprofessional and totally inappropriate. I'd approach the supervisor very professionally and tell him/her about the rumour that is going around the office. I'd not include in any way the name of the person who mentioned it to me. I think if Boosh doesn't approach this person now, they are always going to have issues with this person all the time. If the person does not get the message, then I'd go to the person's boss and if I get no response, I'd take it all the way to HR. There are a lot of companies that now record employee's conversations so it doesn't surprise me that the supervisor wasn't eavesdropping but actually heard the whole conversation. You would think people would be working instead of gossiping. That supervisor should not be a supervisor with that kind of behavior. I'm one of those that if anything happens and I don't feel comfortable, I speak my mind about it and report it to whoever I have to if necessary. I don't think anyone should take any crap from anyone just because they have the title of supervisor, and especially if I'm correct about it. Good Luck to Boosh
