Anyone ever been to Puerto Rico...

I am not posting this in the travel section cuz it is slow there...I have a better chance of responses...

One of the stops on my cruise this year is San Juan, Puerto Rico...and we will be there from 3pm to 11p.m. ... for those of you who have been to PR what would you recommend a tour of San Juan the City or going to the Rainforest...I can only do one cuz we are there for a couple of hours. we also want to have dinner in PR so therefore can ony do one tour...

which tour is the more interesting one?

Re: Anyone ever been to Puerto Rico...

The rainforest is great - I LOVED IT when I was there last year, but you'll have more time for Old San Juan because you'll be right there when the ship docks as opposed to the rainforest which you would have to travel to get to. And there's always traffic along the way there.

You can't go wrong with either one though!

Re: Anyone ever been to Puerto Rico...

I'd be more excited about Tortola.... certain parts of PR are nice... but I was disappointed when I went.... too Americanized (it was like a tropical NY) - would have liked more PR culture. I had a great time, but not a FABULOUS time... then again, I didn't go to the Rainforest, and I wish I would have. I went to Old San Juan, and there isn't much to look at but old buildings/forts... so I would suggest Rainforest instead (it's rarer).

ETA: Either way, it sounds like you're going to have a great time on that cruise... really nice islands you're stopping at. Chat Icon

I'd pick the rain forest over Old San Juan. It's something to see and like Lichi said, it's different.

Re: Anyone ever been to Puerto Rico...

We did the rainforest. Our guide(a guy my DH found on the street with a van) did not want to go inside the rainforest because a hurricane was coming. So he parked in the lot and gave us his cell phone number. We went on the trail and found the waterfall. It was fantastic. DH and I went down in waterfall, other couple was too nervous so they hung out on the rocks. You discover soon why PR flags always have frogs on them. You hear the coqui(sp) from the car. We also saw a bull on the side of the road as well. Don't wear flipflops because some of the trails are wet and steep. I will try and post pics tonight.

Re: Anyone ever been to Puerto Rico...

OMG...I totally cannot wait for this cruise! we are going in 4 weeks...leaving July 16...

are there good places to eat at in the area of where your ship is docked? that way right after dinner we can just go back on the ship and not have to drive anywhere....we'll do that in the daytime if we go to the rainforest...

I personally liked the city better than the rain forest.

IMO..the Rainforest is an ALL DAY thing..it is VERY beautiful, but your whole day would be taken up with it.

I agree with that. We also got stuck in traffic driving back to the ship, making us all nervous.

ETA:I just noticed you said 3-11. by the time you get off the ship and find a ride it will be 4. I think the rainforest was an hour away. so that is 5. it is really big too.

Re: Anyone ever been to Puerto Rico...

There's this really nice restaurant in the Condado area (less than a 5 min drive from Old San Juan) that I absolutely LOVED called Ajili Mojili. They even have a website: Ajili Mojili Restaurant

If you choose not to do the Rainforest All-day thing, Isla Verde is really nice beach... about a $12 (8 min) cab ride from Old San Juan.

drink soda or beer there as well. I think they may bottle their own water there, DH and I got really sick after buying bottled water near the ship. DH said it was probably clean, our system was just not use to it.

did you find your own ride or did you sign up with the excursion by the ship?

I saw online that the tour is 4 and a half hours...is that true then?...like you said if there is traffic and stuff....and I am a very nervous person when it comes to being on time for things...especially with getting back to your ship on time...

we did not book through ship. I think you will have enough time, but if you wanted to go out to eat that may be a problem, unless you wanted to eat wet and muddy. you figure you will return to ship at 8ish if everything is on time. it is also hard to plan because we had a hurricane coming, so traffic was really bad, almost 2.5 hours to get back.

Re: Anyone ever been to Puerto Rico...

The rain forest for sure.. The tour of old san juan isn't that much, it's mostly about the old buildings and how the city was first developed.

Re: Anyone ever been to Puerto Rico...

DH and I stayed in PR for 4 days at the end of our honeymoon cruise.

I'd definitely do the Rainforest tour... We planned to go, but it rained the day we were supposed to go.

We did a tour of Old San Juan and the forts, unless you are interested in history of the island I'd skip it. DH loved it, I was bored after an hour.

We went to the Barcadi Factory, it was OK. They give you tickets for 2 drinks and take you on a museum like tour. I thought we were going to see the actual place were the alcohol was made. The gift shop with all the different types of Barcadi was the best part (I stocked up on stuff they didn't sell in the states).
