Would you send your son or daughter to an all-girls or all-boys school

Why or why not? Would you be more likely to seek same-sex education for one gender over another?

Is there any particular reason you feel so strong?

Re: Would you send your son or daughter to an all-girls or all-boys school

Yes, in a heart beat. I went to an all girls high school and all women's college and believe me, I don't think I would be the woman today had I not had such strong influences around me.

Don't get me wrong, there were plenty of boys outside of school! However, while in school, the focus was on classes and other extra ciricular activities.

Having taught in both single sexed and co-ed schools, I have found that less "bullying" goes on in single-sexed schools because the boys aren't there to be impressed.

However, that is just my two cents!

Re: Would you send your son or daughter to an all-girls or all-boys school

I wouldn't, unless it was a special case. If my son got into Regis, I totally wouldn't say no. A god private eeducation for free? heck yes! Or if my children had a school they really wanted to go to, I'd warn them against it, but I'm not going to say no if that's what they really want. I think a lot of people who go to same gender schools have a lot of problems communicating with the opposite gender. Thee are people who are totaly shy around the opposite sex to the point where it's debilitating (I once got replaced as a tutor because the student, who went to an al boys school was too nervous around me), and then there are peope who just don't know how to act, like guys who went to all boys schools and don't know when to quit it with burp and fart jokes, or don't know how to communicate outside of "guyspeak."

In general though, I think the more vvariety a child is exposed to in terms of race, religions, gender, etc, the more well rounded and empathic he's likely to be. I just think that diversity is always a good thing

I don't think I would, kids need to learn to socialize with both sexes.

I don't think I would. I think it is important to be able to learn and socialize with both genders, as this is what they will face when they are out of school.

No. Nothing against anyone who has gone to an same sex school, but I think just like those and again no offense that went to catholic school ( I went till 4th gradeChat Icon ) come out of school a bit sheltered and "different". I think its b/c of the discipline and confinement.

i dont know if i would... depends on the school itself (like if its top notch curriculum, etc...) and how it was compared to the other schools in the area (ultimately i would go with whats best if i could).

BUT i definately have to defend the stance FOR same sex schools- i went to one, and i can honestly say that i am not and was not Sheltered in any way and havent really Ever had any problems with socializing Chat Icon Chat Icon

i think this is one of those things that people "theorize", but without much fact. Going to an all girls school doesnt equal not knowing how to talk to boys Chat Icon

Never. I enjoyed my experiences at a co-ed school, and the so-called advantages of same sex schools just don't make sense to me.

I taught in an all boys and an all girls school. IMO, it does benefit some kids a great deal, but overwhelmingly I think it is more beneficial to girls than to boys. In my experience, i think it was also more beneficial to students who came from lower income areas.

In all likelyhood, no I wouldn't, but these are some reason why I would consider it.

Exactly I went to an all girls school and I think Neenie and I are two of the least sheltered people on this siteChat Icon

I loved my education and excelled at so many things in school....in our school girls could and did anything, school govt, sports, plays, you name it. If I had boys in school with me I may not have gotten such good grades.

Oh and I never had a problem finding a date

Neen and Moe.
I honestly mean no disrespect...can you tell me if there was a certain reason that you/your parents choose to send you to a private same sex school?

It was the best high school in the area....100% of students went onto college and my parents felt it was a good opportunity for me to be challenged by an outstanding curriculum. It helped me become a strong opinionated woman who never gave a rats a$$ about a boy....and yes I did have a social life while in HSChat Icon

Is Lasalle still open? I vaguely remember hearing it closed down.

Well, it's now the Bourne Mansion, where I got marriedChat Icon Also, St. John's owns the campus now. I do, however, think they might operate a smaller branch of the school somewhere else.

ETA: I would not send my child to a single-sex school unless they seemed to require it. I think that school is not only about the things you learn in the classroom, but about the life lessons that go along with it. Being in a co-ed school may have more distractions for kids, but it also is an opportunity to teach them to balance their lives. (of course if you have parents who instill that in their child).
