If/when you have a baby, do you and your SO both work?

if you do, how do you work out with your hours and everything?

I dont know how we're going to do this- when the time comes.. We cant afford our mortgage and other bills all on my DH's salary..i'll have to go back to work probably very shortly after giving birth

How do you all do it?

YES we both have to work and we will both have the same hours

I looked into the daycare here at work and i like it. Probably use it 2xs a week.
My mom said she would help out the other days Chat Icon

Re: If/when you have a baby, do you and your SO both work?

My DH will be working and I am looking into part time or working from home a few days a week. I've been at my job for about 5 years and women here have been accomodated to work from home. Much of what I do is administrative and involves phone calls and e-mails, so easy to do. I REALLY do not want to go the day care route. I'll be looking into sitters.

My dream is work completely from home or be a SAHM, but we'll see.

I don't work anymore, DH does. I'm so happy to have the chance to be home with the baby and not miss a thing!

Re: If/when you have a baby, do you and your SO both work?

fortunately, we have both sets of parents nearby and her mom is young, so she can chase the kid around when need be Chat Icon

the hours work out nicely too

boosh leaves at 6:40, i leave at 7:40, so i can get the kid dressed in the morning

she gets home around 5:30 and i get home at 7:30 on average, so she can take the night shift

We will both work, but since DH teaches college he only has to be on campus 3 days a week. He'll be home with our kids the other two days and they will go to daycare for three days. He has a great schedule and that helps a lot- next semester he will not have a class till almost noon. He'll also probably have to be the one to drop the kids off, since I leave at 6 am and I know most of the daycare places do not open till 6:30.

The plan is I am not going to work until the child(ren) are in school and then I will work PT. Our families dont live close to us at all and we will not put our child in daycare.

I wish I could work part time but we just can't. We both have to work full time. Our hours are the same (9am - 5pm) so the baby gets dropped off at the sitter (my Dad & his wife) at 8am and and DH picks him up after work. It s u c k s so bad because I basically only get to see my son 2 - 3 hrs each day during the week. Breaks my heart a little everyday. Chat Icon

And Daycare centers are sooooo expensive.

I am pregnant and dealing with this now. We will both work and either put the baby in daycare or hire a nanny. DH just started a new business which is going well- but out health insurance is through my company- not to mention I make a good salary and have a great job with amazing hours for my industry and I am alone most of the time in my office anyway.

Re: If/when you have a baby, do you and your SO both work?

I will have to work...as I make the bigger salary of the two of us. I hopefully will be able to work from home 2 days a week, so we will only have to worry about daycare for 3 days. We don't have any family near by, so we are on our own.

My story too, except I work a night job three to five days a week, and don't get home most nights until after 9:00Chat Icon So I basically see her one hour in the morning and one or two at night. It's very disheartening but I'm trying to get things going so that I can change our situation around. My Mom (thanks MomChat Icon ) watches her during the week. My Dad is a huge help with her too and enjoys being able to dote on a little one (he traveled alot while we were growing up). He said it melts his heart when she puts her little arms up and says "uppp papa" to him. It's not an ideal situation but if I waited until I could afford a baby, I would plain out never have one. That's whats holding us back from having another one in the immediate future.

As much as it's hard to leave your kids, I think they do benefit by having all these relatives who love them and care for them. DH and I will basically be on our own, because both sets of parents are far away and won't be able to help us. But I am glad that DH will be able to at least be a SAHD two days a week- he will be more involved than if he had a regular 9-5 M-F type of job.

as much as I would love to be a SAHM, its not gonna happen. (unless I hit the lotto or DH get a raise 3xs more then what he makes now)
so I'm gonna beg my mom to move back to help out.

Re: If/when you have a baby, do you and your SO both work?

Right now the plan is for DH to stay at home with the baby while I work during the day and continue with school at night. When he graduates law school in May and takes the bar in July, he'll go back to work also. At that point, we'll have to put him in day care.

We both work. DH leaves by 5am to catch his train. I drop the kids off at daycare at 7am-ish to catch a 7:34 train. DH picks them up by 5:30pm, I get home at 6:30pm - we eat as soon as I get home. Daycare (for 2) comes out to a little more than $20K/yr.

We could probably swing it on just his salary, but would have to cut back on the extras & fixing the house.

My job is flexible if I need to work from home if the kids are sick - or if DH gets OT, I can leave early or my mom/sisters can pick them up.

WHile I prefer the daycare option, if you have someone watch them in their own home it's significantly less money.

I am a SAHM since we figured out that my salary (non profit sector) would not have covered daycare, let alone my commuting and working expenses, like gas, work clothes, lunch, etc. We're fortunate that we can survive on DH's salary, but we do make sacrifices. We rarely go out (although part of that is we really don't have anyone to watch her), I'm very cost conscious of everything now, I clip coupons, shop sales, etc.

Re: If/when you have a baby, do you and your SO both work?

When the time comes I already know we will both have to return to work fulltime .. the plan right now is that my Mom will be watching any future children , at leaset part time.. the other days the child will be in daycare

I'd much prefer to be a SAHM but there is absolutely no way for us to do that financially... as long as we remain living in NY that is.... Chat Icon

We will both have to work. His hours are totally unreliable. He goes in at 9am and sometimes ends up working straight through the night. My hours are normal but I live over an hour away. I don't know what we will do, but it has been the topic of conversation lately.
