Re: What do you all think about this? Wal-Mart: We're not afraid to say Merry Christmas

IMO when greeting random customers walking into the store the appropriate thing to say is HAPPY HOLIDAYS
Not Merry Christmas
Why would anyone assume that everybody is Christian?
I agree. I don't see what's wrong with wishing people Happy Holidays. I'm not offended if someone wishes me a Merry Christmas. However, I'd prefer greeters at a store to say the generic Happy Holidays as opposed to Merry Christmas. Why not tailor your greetings to a broader group of customers? It's not as though only Christians shop at their store.

i couldn't care less - i have more important things to worry about then what some stranger says to me as i'm about to go shopping. seriously, i think the media just hypes things up just to create more controversy

I think Wal Mart should cross its "T"s and Dot its "I"s...they are in every controversial issue out there. They are losing so many customers by their actions. Whether they want to say Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays...who cares. Stay out of the papers already!!!!!!!

Re: What do you all think about this? Wal-Mart: We're not afraid to say Merry Christmas
I don't think it is right what they are doing. The whole holiday tree thing is ridiculous, a christmas tree is a christmas tree - but only greeting people with a "merry christmas" and only displaying christmas signs in the store is a whole different issue. This is showing they have no regard for people who do not celebrate christmas. Am I offended when people say Merry Christmas to me - no- but I am a little annoyed that they just assume I celebrate christmas. For a national chain to make this a policy is being disciminatory, and not something that should be done.

I am a little confused. Are they also only carrying just Christmas stuff? That would be NUTS.

Saying Happy Holidays is a way to spread joy to not a particular faith
MERRY CHRISTMAS is spread the joy of the CHRISTIAN faith ONLY
While I agree with your statement, the majority of society doesnt associate religous beliefs with Christmas. It's a well wish not a force of religous beliefs

I do not remember what town it was but last year one of the towns had to refer to their tree as a Holiday Tree because some non-christians were offended that it was a Christmas tree. Um, it was a Christmas tree. I personally have a winter solstice tree, but most people don't KMIW?
Should we call the Menorah just Holiday Candles? I just think that in trying to be PC we are changing the essence of what these things really mean. JMHO.
ETA I am not christian, but I am not a fan of the commercialization of any religious celebration either. If I am greeted at Walmart with "Merry Christmas", do you think it would be ok for me to say "thanks, happy Hanukkah!"
I say go for it! I would if I was Jewish
That's what I always say in response I love the holiday season, I love the lights, the CHRISTMAS trees... and I don't mind christmas paraphenalia, but honestly, when I check out at the register, it does slightly offend me when someone says to me Merry Christmas, so just personally, I would prefer Happy Holidays - it shows recognition and respect for everyone celebrating the season in their own way...

Re: What do you all think about this? Wal-Mart: We're not afraid to say Merry Christmas
You're right, you've got me there- I too buy different cards for different friends and I didn't think about it that way but I've never seen/experienced anyone being annoyed by some stranger wishing them a Merry Christmas rather than a Happy Holidays, Christian or not.
I guess I'm limiting my views to my everyday circumstances but as I stated earlier, say what ever you want to me as long as it's in the wonderful holiday spirit!
Happy Holidays to all!

personality I don't care one way or the other- I wont even walk into a walmart - I don't care how cheap the toliet paper is
but just to play devil's advocate- I bet 90% of the people who shop there celebrate christmas
we livel in a very diverse part of the country- but the vast majority of the country isn't
I went to school in Colorado and said something to my new friends about not getting off school from the Jewish Holiday's and guess what they said to me
"you know Jewish People"

Great new perspective, we forget that Walmart originates from an area that is majority Christian and continues to thrive in those areas.

yep... it's a different world out there outside of NY.
when my sister moved to CA 10 years ago, she had to drive an hour away to get matza for Passover.

regardless of what the population is that frequents their store or where the store is...
This nation is becoming more and more diverse as we speak..
And imo...it is just ignorance..
IMO it is stupid to generalize like that...

While I'm happy to see a resurgenced in "Christmas", it's upsetting that it is only being done to boost sales.
I say Merry Christmas usually. However, if it's a complete stranger, I'll say Happy Holidays.

Re: What do you all think about this? Wal-Mart: We're not afraid to say Merry Christmas
My take on it is this
Not everyone is Catholic or Christian so you can't really use "Merry Christmas" with everyone. So, I have no problem with "Happy Holidays"
Where I have the problem is where people refer to Christmas as X-Mas. Drives me nuts.
I realize that Christmas has become this big commercial racket. But there are a few of us that still acknowledge the purpose of the day.
If you don't celebrate Christmas, say "Happy Holidays"
And I guess I can understand that there are people who celebrate Christmas who don't believe in Christ. Whether they are right or wrong, it just irks me to see it.

Actually the south is pretty anti-Catholic (and anti-Yankee, can't see to many of them coming up here to join us). The Christian south is "generally" Protestant.
I wasn't talking about the south in America
south of America- Mexio
Wal Mart is making a HUGE effort to get mexican immigrants to shop there- including spanish on there packages and store signage

Re: What do you all think about this? Wal-Mart: We're not afraid to say Merry Christmas
there are really bigger social issues in the world then if some worker at walmart says merry christmas or happy holidays
how about the fact that the people working there don't have heath insurance or make a living wage - now that's a real issue!

that shouldn't be an excuse for any kind of ignorance
