It's GOOD that he tries to grab the spoon. I heard that when you don't let the baby "feed them selves" it hinders thier independance and they always want you to feed them later on.
You might want to try giving him his own spoon so he can feed himself, and also having a spoon for you to feed him with so that you know he's getting it all in.
