My American Cancer Society Relay for Life experience

I figured I would start a post since I have receieved a few FMs asking about it.

Let me start by saying that I am honored that I could walk for such an worthy charity. This was our 4th Relay and DH's 2nd as a cancer survivor. Regardless of the weather, this is a wonderful event that raises a great deal of money. I don't know yet how much the Relay as a whole raised, but hopefully it's signficant! THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH to those that donated! I appreciate it!!! Chat Icon

My team dwindled significantly this year and at the last minute, we had 2 others decide they didn't want to do it. That left 4 of us, as 2 of our friends had to alternate so someone could watch their children. Despite this, our team determination was strong! It poured at points during the beginning of the Relay. DH was soakded during the Survivors lap. I cried tears of pride as I watched him walk around the track with the other survivors. It stopped raining around 7 PM and only rained for about 5 minutes around 3 AM. I had the honor of reading some of the survivors names. I read DH's name (along with my grandmother and grandfather's names) with great pride and didn't cry until I walked over to him!
I walked a total of 12 miles during the course of the night. DH walked 11, our friend Laura walked 9. We stayed until 7 AM and were so happy that we made it the whole night.

Here are some pictures. There are more in my community album.

I also participated in Relay for Life 3 years in a row inspired by my mother-in-law. She was able to walk all 3 years as a Survivor but unfortunately, has since passed away.
We will walk next year in memory of her.

It is such a humbling and awe-inspiring event.

Continued health and prayers to your dh!!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: My American Cancer Society Relay for Life experience

i only recently became aware of this event. My sisters did it last week at the West Hempstead relay. Of curse they didnt tell me- TEENS!
My asst principal did that week. she did it for her husband who passed away last year of brain cancer.

I would definately love to participate in one of those events. Do they post them on the ACS board?? How do you go about putting one together??

I know my sister and I would love to do it.. We can actually create our own team since we have quite a few family memebers that would do it. Our family, friends and their families have been hit tragically by cancer.
My cousin is battling it now and after 8 years, drs. said they can do no more for her... It is VERY scary.. My dad is VERY close with her. Chat Icon
